This one has me really scratching my head! Disassembled and overhauled the tranny out of my '91 Miata. I got it all of the way back together to the point of reinstalling the countershaft front bearing(17-297A in the manual diagram). But when I went to drive the bearing in, I couldn't get it to go all of the way in. Tore the thing back apart and saw that the bearing was as far onto the countershaft as it could go, with the spacer(17-304B) behind it. But, the bearing still was not on far enough to even see the snap ring groove. Its almost as if the front snout on the countershaft is too short to get the spacer, bearing and snap ring onto it. Any ideas? Thanks!
Thanks soupy! Yes, I matched the bearing up with the old one and its a perfect match. I have another transmission that I went ahead and took apart to see how it was put together. That tranny doesn't have the spacer on the countershaft. So, now I know that spacer doesn't go there, but now, where DOES IT go?

Spacer goes with the rear roller bearing of the countershaft. If you orderd from Mazda by phone, they almost always send a new one. Most likely you reinstalled the old one. Now you have and extra... Ed

Nope, I didn't replace the countershaft. Comparing to my spare tranny, I think I've got the correct spacers on the rear end of the countershaft. I'm going to continue breaking down my spare tranny to figure out where this thing goes.
