Soliciting ideas for what to tech in impound after the various sessions.

My list is very long right now but I'm sure I've forgotten things.

Here's what would be most helpful...

Explain what you want teched, why, and the procedure for doing so using any FSM pages or other material to back it up.

Feel free to post here or pm me for my email address.

I've spoken to many about pet peeves that they have already. Feel free to type something up so I can put it in my tech notebook. It would be a big help. I've got a lot going on right now with the Nationals.

Thanks for your help!

Jason

OK serious answer, the books that teach people how to cheat say to cheat the things that don't get teched......

I would suggest that sometime over the weekend you randomly check the following on a couple cars, to my knowledge these were not checked last year and although they do not make the car faster they are safety issues.

Light test from trunk to drivers compartment.
Kill switch.
Battery location, attachment.

I know the annual techs sign this stuff off, but it's a long season and who knows what might happen.

Tony, your going to DQ someone after a race for a ray of light coming out of his trunk. [Embarrassed]

I think the manpower could be better served checking for some performance gaining items.

NO I don't suggest DQ for this, but my point was there are quite a few regs that exist that don't affect the speed of the car. We tend to concentrate on the protestable and competition rules here, and I was playing the devil's advocate a little.

you could tech the jelly in Fowlers trailer? They might have brought something back from California, that need to be looked at.
This weekend SCCA did compliance checks at random.????? Restrictor plates. and battery trays and tie downs??? I guess this is what the extra fee goes for.

Jason:
Let's check some gas. A few competitors had fumes that made my eyes water last year!

Likewise. I never saw (in two impounds) anyone checking exhaust manifolds for obvious tinkering (i.e. welds on the outside of tubes at the flange)

Rick,

We're working on the gas issue now. There will be something in place. A few competitors have even offered to pay for testing themselves!

As for Exhaust manifolds, that was checked last year on the podium cars and one random impound check. It will be on the list again this year I think.

Just make sure you are using the same QC procedures as Bilstein. The spec miata shock is a MASS produced unit, not some Penske. Use the same tolerances as Bilstein, not some arbitrary percentage of variance that a tech inspector came up with to catch cheaters.

Shock Specs directly from Bilstein:

Here are the shock specs: HD refers to the shock blank, just in case there are others out there as ignorant as I two days ago.
Front shocks: B46-1488
4595 n*m Rebound, 410 n*m Compression (4595 Joules = 3389.27200 Ft-lbs)
Rear shocks: B46-1489
3325 n*m Rebound, 390 n*m Compression (3325 Joules = 2452.52000 Ft-lbs)
If you have a shock dyno, those numbers are at a velocity of .52 m/sec = 1.70612 ft/sec
Manufacturers tolerance is -+10%
