Normally I'm the first person to defend NASCAR because I enjoy the tight racing.

But what is up with FOX's coverage during pre-race??????

2nd race of the season, coming off a controversial 1st race -the Daytona 500 (with Jr. causing "the big one") and Kenseth getting the win (the first 500 win for Rouch).

Daytona drama, 43 drivers to talk about, new teams, new sponsors. And I have to watch some loser singing for 5 minutes on stage??? And not even like AC/DC or a cool band... some dork singing some crappy love balad?? Freakin American Idol "pop -rock" This is freaking car racing people, not ice skating!

And then they air this 5 minute animated cartoon involving their new corporate whore/logo gopher "Digger". If you don't know, FOX has this cool "underground" camera that sits right next to the track...they call it "Digger Cam"...but now they just whore it out to this stupid cartoon character. So even during the race, you are distracted by this animated gopher, instead of looking at the cars.

FOX, you've always sucked, your News is right-winged, fixed, and scare/terror driven, your TV shows are mediocre at best, and now you've REALLY screwed up your NASCAR coverage. You pre-race show is total garbage and has no substance. Shame on you FOX.
[nope]

1 agree 100%. I HATE NASCAR, but with the last 4 months off I am desperate to watch any racing so I tuned in...Three seconds into that digger bit and I was back to SPEED. That was just plain painful to watch. Sorry to say the race wasn't much better and whats with the 500 lipitor and viagra commercials. Man, that is the target audience I want to be associated with javascript:void(0)

I love racing on the tube. Any kind of racing, but I cannot watch Fox. It makes me ill. I flipped over to the golf broadcast. Much more drama and no friking gopher cam. Although the gophers in Cady Shack were much better than that animated crapolla.
Kill the rodent and all the rest of them.

What I can't figure out is how much pre race coverage do you really need? I saw there was like 2 hours of Nascar Race Day on speed and that the race was coming on at 4PM my time. I skipped the Race Day show as always and turned on the tube at 4PM. The race didn't start till 5:30! WTH? You would think it was the super bowl or something.

Oh, and as long as I am ranting, if I have to hear that bozo Darrell whatever explain that you can't race in the rain and that is why they throw 50 yellow flags I am going to stroke out! They are pretty much the only series that doesn't race in the rain!!!

Not to get into a journalistic integrity discussion, but any news station that has a waving american flag behind their network logo while claiming to be "fair and balanced" has no clue what those words mean. How can you be fair and balanced when you're clearly biased toward the USA?

Don't get me wrong, I'm as patriotic as the next guy. I'm just saying there's a time and place for waving flags, and during a news broadcast is not one of them. The first thing you learn in journalism is you always strive to be unbiased, even though it is impossible. Well Fox isn't even striving to be unbiased when they have the waving flag logo.

I agree that NASCAR should be racing in the rain on road courses and short tracks, but going 200mph+ into a corner on a wet super speedway is probably not a good idea [Eek!]

No politics or "the economy", please.
There is enough on which to rant with the NASCRAP coverage. I have not heard the BBB at the start since 2007. I always mute the start, so I don't hurl on my remote. We've raced on rovals all over the country, why can't they. So, they only go 140 on the oval, instead of 190, it's still racing. That way Boris would win several races each season.

I'm not gonna edit anything just yet but Pat is in the ballpark. Fox Nascrap has nothing to do with Fox News. If you want to bash Fox Nascrap, go for it.... if you want to bash Fox News there are plenty of other sites on the interwebz where you can do it.

PS - In this case I am not support one side of the other, you can bash Fox News for being on the radical right just as much as you can bash MSNBC as being a mouth piece for the loony left. I'm moderhating from the "it don't need to be part of this site" view.

Democrat or Republican, I think the one thing we can all agree on is that the 5 minute long Digger cartoon before the race yesterday was a new low point for Fox, NASCAR and racing in general...

When it first came on, I thought that the cook at Phyllis' Giant Burgers had slipped a "special" mushroom into my cheesesteak and I was hallucinating.

I've been disappointed with NASCAR coverage in the past when they do "technical segments" that are just dead wrong, but I'd much rather hear DW butcher the explanation of heel-toe shifting for the 10th time than see another second of that goddamn gopher cartoon.

Just one guy's opinion.

I admit I haven't been able to watch more than a few laps, and even less of the pre-race show, but here is what I know.

NASCAR has developed colorfull characters, rivalries, hidden agendas, showdowns, and finally fist fights between drivers and crew.

They have done a good job of making it interesting for people who aren't interested in racing, and they are hoping that the racing fans will stay around for the little bit of racing there is.

Its all about broadening the appeal and making more money.

I don't like the racing and the rest is nauseating.

I while I previously considered Monster Trucks to be the lowest form of racing (the actual races, not the free style events), NASCAR has dethroned them.

They are now truly the professional wrestling of the motorsports world, and they have more money than they know what to do with because of it.

Greg

ps. I am starting to get into monster trucks as there is one that looks like a dog and my son really likes it.

When someone I know says they like to watch NASCAR, I remind them that it is a nice show for wrestling fans but it is NOT racing. How would you like to go 500 miles in a race and be first across the finish line and have NASCAR say.... Oh no... you haven't won yet because we are under a yellow flag... You have to race some more until we can have a last lap or two shootout.... And don't they have special yellows in some races for commercials and to group the cars so a fast guy doesn't run away with it and they'll have more accidents. Lets not talk about 1960s technology.... No incar data and still using carbs.... Dale said yesterday that they won't go to FI because their tech inspectors are too stupid to tech the computers. While I'm on the subject, whats with the third grade English... even from the announcers.... Is there some lower form of redneck that they are talking to...I saw an interview with Brian Vickers during one of the few times I glanced in last year. The announcer asked him about his language and he said that his mom had instilled in him a lifelong love of reading books. He wondered if any of his fellow drivers had done so. It's like wrestling .... all fake for the fans... Nothing to do with real racing...

I agree, they should race in the rain.I think it's a joke that they don't (pansies's).F1 races in the rain why not Nascar,F1 car's are faster then Nascrap car's anyway.

Why don't they,is it that they feel the driver's aren't talented enough or smart enough to handle it?

I long for the days of Speedvision....before Fox bought them and they became Speed (now known as the Nascar channel). I miss the DTM,Aussie V8 series, and other real races. They used to have real car shows until Unique Whips and other crap kept rerunning every night and day. I am so sick of mud racing and tractor pulls. I have started watching some of the shows on Discovery's HD Theater like the Aston Martin vintage guys racing at Spa and other car shows. I am glad Wind Tunnel is back and can't wait for F1. Fox and digger suck as far as race coverage goes. They started the Rolex 24 hrs at 3:30pm because of Fox, the Daytona 500 started at 3:30 because of Fox, and then they start the Cal 500 so it coincided with the Oscars (try arguing with your wife, girlfriend over what channel you are watching) dumbest damn network around.

F1 tracks usually have tons of run off and aren't surrounded by concrete. Don't get me wrong. Goodyear makes a NASCAR rain tire and they should use it. I just think it may not be a good idea at all of the tracks.

Speaking of tires, at least F1 is going back to slicks. I hope the 2009 rules make for some better racing. F1 racing has been far from exciting the past few years.
