I've been looking for a donor and came across an ad in Craigslist for a 1999 for $1950. A little low, so I send an email, and this is what I got back:

Hello,

My name is Thomas Easterling and this is my 1999 MAZDA MX-5 MIATA CONVERTIBLE 5SPD NEW BODY STYLE with 168,148 miles has a clear carfax. The general condition is excellent with no cosmetic complaints really worth comment. Both remote keys are present and are in working order,no electrical issues. Everything work perfect!
Thank you for your interest in my car. First year of the new body style. Garage kept, non-smoker, dealer serviced and just inspected. Fully loaded with options including power windows, power mirrors, optional windscreen, Nardi steering wheel, alloy wheels, cd player, dual airbags, and more. Runs and drives great with cold a/c, everything works and the top is in excellent condition.
Here are some pics :

(if the above link does not work copy and paste it into a new web browser window)

I bought this car when I was serving in U.S. Army base located in Brevard County, Florida.
Price was reduced to $1950 (URGENT SALE) as I need to sell it in 2 weeks because I will leave with the other troops in Afghanistan.
In order to sell my car, the financial part will be handled by US Army financial Department. This service was made only for US ARMY members!
That means that you will have 7 days available for any inspection of it. This way both of us will be 100% covered during the steps of this transaction.
If you're really interested in buying my car, make sure that you really have the cash available!
I will open a transaction with US Army Shopping service and they will contact and will explain you the steps of this transaction.
At the moment I'm stationed in our US Military AFB in England (Europe). making final preparations before deploying to Afghanistan with the U.S. Convoy !
The car is already at our Military Logistic Department form Florida, U.S. Army base located in Brevard County, crated and ready to go. The Logistic Department will deliver it to your home.
Since the car is in a military base, and you can't go there to take it, only the Logistics Department can deliver it, because it's in their custody.
Shipping may take anywhere between 4-5 business days depending on the destination. All documents you need for ownership, log book , manuals and bill of sale will be provided along with the car.
For the payment I will use our US Army financial department as a third party. They will keep your money into a protection account until you get the car and will release it to me after inspection period is over and you agree to keep it. So, this is not a blind transaction, you can see the car before committing to buy and to eliminate any concerns you will have 7 days to inspect it. If you decide not to keep it US Army logistics will refund your all money, no questions asked, and shipping back will be my concern. I think this is more than fair for both of us.
I'll start the official procedure, and US Army shopping service will contact you about this. If you are interested in buying it just mail me back with:
- Your Full Name - Required by US Army shopping service (You'll receive important guidelines + instructions from them.)
- Your Shipping Address - Required by the Logistics Department (They will contact you by email with delivery/pickup instructions 1 day ahead so you can communicate what time schedule work best for your to receive the car)
Again I want to point out that because I am going to Afghanistan this sale is my top priority and I am looking after a fast transaction, with no delays. That is why I decided to lower the price, to avoid wasting time with negotiations and find a buyer as soon as possible.
I prefer talking all the transaction details by the phone but right now I`m in a military base, getting ready for Afghanistan and for this reason I don't have access to the phone for the next 2 weeks.

Thanks, hope to do business with you soon!
MSgt. Thomas Easterling

I can't find the ad anymore, otherwise I would post it as well.

The photo links show what looks like a brand new Miata with clear wrap in the passenger side foot well.

I was a dork and sent my email address which is a permutation of my real name. Now these geeks will be hounding me forever.

It's a common scam. They reword it a bit but it usually involves you putting your money is some sort of "escrow" account and never getting the car or your money back.

There were multiple ads like this on Craigslist here in Houston this past weekend. One was for a '99 Miata, another for a '05 BMW 5 series for an ultra low price of $4500, etc. Most had been tagged for removal.

If you question a listing, try an advanced google search using some of the keywords and craigslist.org as domain. You'll see if there are multiple areas that it is being listed in. Thousands of scammers doing this stuff on craigslist.

I got one of these guys to send the check to the local police department once. He emailed me two weeks after asking why i had not sent the product yet and I told him to call me at the local police ph number. He didn't bother me again. I feel firmly that wasting their time costs me little and is time they can't use to bother someone else.

I e-mailed him back and mentioned something about an ongoing relationship between his mother and a camel. Never heard back. [scratchchin]

CNN did a report last spring on these type of scams. They tracked down a couple in Africa and went to their house (well to their hut). The couple did an interview with them and basically said that the internet and sites like Ebay and Craigslist has made it easy to scam Westerners. CNN asked the couple if they felt bad about ripping off good honest people. They replied that Americans are stupid and have insurance, so noone is getting hurt in these deals.

F... you. You live in a hut with a dirt floor.

Went through the same thing on e-bay last month, '32 roadster. In conversation with e-bay security, this type of scam needs to be reported to the FBI. I had 2 bank account numbers here in the states and names (alias). To report http://www.ic3.gov

Been there, Done That!! The wasting their time part. It's like getting a solicitor on the phone, they are fair game if I am having a bad day. It's free stress relief [Smash]

Yup. When I was looking for a farm tractor last year I found a John Deere that was priced too good to be true. Same scam.
