Has anybody seen an entry list? I've looked on the neohion scca site and Nelson site and couldn't find anything.

Eric, are you gonna start typing or what? [Razz] You plan on being there? I will probably stop by to register for the one day double regional on Saturday. Beware the carousel!

My laptop doesn't even have MSoffice on it, so I passed it on to the rest of the team.... [Big Grin]

We'll be there with our $400 LeMons reject, basically doing a 12 hour test for the 24 hours as an STU. If the car is still running Saturday night, I'll sign up Sunday morning for the double... unfortunately in Group 6.

What's up with the carousel? Ahhh, never mind, just tell me later.... [fight]

Maybe we should.... mounting the seat high enough for Howie to see over the wheel put Jonesy up on the roof!

Fortunately, it only took two hours & change for us to finish(or not) right where we qualified...

It seems as though there are a few defective crystal balls out there. I think the 27 car was multiple laps down hours before you made your predictions.... I know they were looking for a welder about two or three hours in.

Rowleys qualified 15th overall, 4th in SM. I think they were still running at the finish & probably faired pretty well....

The class of the SM field had trouble early & left the door wide open for everyone else.

I can tell you from experience that the fenders are a heck of a lot easier to get used to than driving Nelson after 9pm!! [Big Grin] [Eek!]

By Memory (accuracy disclaimer because of age),

Overall

1st # 92 ITE Honda Accord HART Marysville, OH (something like 520 laps)
2nd # 15 SRF SRF H.I.P.P.I. Racing Columbus, OH (something like 20 laps down)
3rd # 6 ITS Mazda Miata BERG Racing Webster, NY
4th # 22 ITE BMW 325 IS Team KYFA Lexington, KY (Corrected to be # 21 SM Mazda Miata Race Car Supply Lexington, KY)
5th # 19 ITE Acura Integra Colletti Motorsport Dayton, OH

I'm sure of 1st and 5th, but the others are questionable. Sorry, that was a long day on station, and a long party afterwards.

Also, the #71 Mazda MX-3, Junkyard Dogs from Detroit, MI, with a lot of Nelson experience in SM's vanished early in the day. Maybe they should have stuck with something reliable? The # 27 SM, Puskar Motorsports from Chesterfield, OH, with a few well seasoned SM'ers got down early after spending probably an hour doing a weld repair to suspension mount. I guess you should always carry a spare subframe ready to bolt on.

Jerry

Jerry, Jerry, Jerry, What's more reliable than a $400 MX-3 with 195k miles & what was probably the original clutch?! [Confused] I mean, besides the other 25 cars...hehehe [flamed] We had a lot of fun on the cheap & learned a lot for the Lamest Day.(like, put Howard in the car last)

Had a great race. The BERG Miata chugged on without a beat missed. Never touched another car and never went off track, even though some people think we drive with complete disregard for others on the track. [Wink] I only did one stint in the car but my wife did an almost 3hr stint. She's a trooper! Our RX8 lost a motor (apex seal) at about 5hrs. Too bad as we were on a very conservative strategy and would have done very well I think. [Frown]

#4 was actually the #21 RaceCarSupply.com SM.

It was a good race and its a shame thate the #27 miata went down. I think I heard over the official radio that it was a cracked subframe but it did quite some time before they actually figured it out and got of track to fix it. They were fast. Without there damage we wouldn't have had anything on them.

The #27 broke the right front LCA mounting point on the subframe. It didn't brake off but started tearing and bending out as the brakes were put on. It took them putting Bennett in to figure out where to even look.
And I thought I was the only one the weird stuff happens to.

BJ,

My apologies for not crediting the 21 car with 4th. But as I indicated, I wasn't sure. And I was sorry to see the RX-8 drop out, it looked like it was going to be near the top if it had kept running. But all the corner workers did appreciate that car fogging the track for misquitoes.

No apologies needed. That RX-8 was one good looking car and it went out in spectacular fashion. I had a front row seat for that as it started pouring smoke just before it went under the bridge.
That 22 BMW might have had a chance to be up front, and sorry if any of them are listening, but it seemed they hed the typical, "I'm a big car and I will put my nose wherever I want." Their team complained that we put them off track and it was never confirmed by the corner workers. I asked our driver and he said he was finalay making a pass on another car after working three laps to set it up and saw the #22 spinning of track in his rear view mirrors.

The overall winner seemed to be much more cautious passing slower cars and ended the race without a mark on the car.

The driver we had in there had never driven a spec miata, so he wasn't able to diagnose the problem very well. Bennett being Bennett figured out where to focus our attention and brought it behind the pit wall. Once we found the cracked subframe it took a little while to find the proper welder and get the car to the location where the welder was at (outside the track in a barn). [yep]

That cost us about 1.5 hours, and then later on in the race we got hit by another car that cost us about 30 minutes behind the pit wall. It was just one of those races you have every once in a while. [fight] Congrats to the winners and all the other SM drivers/teams on a good showing. [thumbsup]

We should be back next year with two cars (both SM's)...

I'll echo what has already been mentioned about the overall winner - the HART 1 Honda Accord.

Spectacular drive, guys <applause>. Didn't look like there was a mark on the car when the checker fell. Experience, brains and patience...along with some serious velocity...won out. I never saw them force any pass, or do anything stupid, all day. One nasty sounding Accord.

The same cannot be said of one of the other "fast movers", who (fortunately) retired early. Multiple metal-to-metals in the first hour or so, which apparently resulted in a "chat" with the stewards. Learn to drive, azzhole. I cheered when it was pushed behind the wall, DOA.

Now that I've gotten that out of my system, you're all free to return to your assigned duties.

Since I might be the guy John is mad at, I would like to respond. I did have one incident when lapping a car, which resulted in two contacts (bump bump). I will accept that I was over agressive, I thought the car saw me, but I was wrong. I have raced Nelson in '91, '92, '93, '94, '07, '08, '09, along with the Thunderhill 25 hour multiple times, and this was the first time I have had an incident like that. I was happy to see the car I bumped (white Miata from the NE somewhere) continue and was 2nd in class when I left.
In all the endurance racing I have done, and it includes a dozen 24 hour plus races (4 wins, 3 seconds, 3 thirds) I know that it takes a balance of patience and agression to be successful. I was on the wrong side of that balance when I bumped the white Miata, and I am sorry for it. That was the only contact I had, so if you are talking about me making multiple contacts, I am curious who else thinks I hit them, LOL. Please also note that we were on the same lap as the leader, in a relatively low horsepower car, trying to stay in touch with that fast and well driven Honda. And I was ahead of it when I got out of the MX 5 for our pit stop.

Thanks for the forum, and John I hope you at least enjoy the pictures!

Jim Jordan

Also, if you are not talking about me, at least I get to say I am sorry to the driver of #83.

Well the #94 miata was fun for 11 hours....then "she dun blowed up". Myron got a little over aggressive in the carousel early on and got stuck by the tirewall for about 10 laps. After that (the car wasn't hurt) it ran fine. NL is a good place to race for someone new as it is pretty easy to learn. I am sure to run real fast it takes more seat time, but a new guy can have fun first time out. It was fun running against some of the same guys we ran with at SP. Going thru that little kink at over 100 was fun EVERY TIME! If anybody found a piston the next day please send it to Houston... Myron is short one! [rolling on floor laughin] Oh, and you can keep the pieces of crank case that blew out.
Thanks to all the workers at NL.
(note to readers: After reading my own post, it seems to me that I had a great deal of fun at The 12 hours of Nelson Ledges. It was certainly a good race but maybe not quite as much fun as stated above. In fact after about 4.5 hours behind the wheel I was more wore out than having fun. Just trying to be accurate.) Jim – apology accepted, although not sure what problems you also had with the #83 (not me).

Just for closure and perspective…not a faint-hearted wall-flower here…current primary sprint race tool is an SRF, and I have a decade+ in broken fiberglass, suspension pieces etc. from the rubbing-bumping-banging in that class, and lots of time in the IT wars prior to that. "Contact" isn't a stranger to me.

Also…just to establish that I haven't recently "tumbled off the turnip wagon" into endurance racing, this was our (generally…) two-driver team's 26th twelve-ish hour race, plus a handful of 24's and countless 2-4 hour stuff in SSB, SSC, IT and Miatas. No stranger to enduro seat-time.

I did see you coming, and gave you a lane+ on the inside at the entry to Oak Tree. Certainly more than enough to move thru the pack of traffic we were in. What followed, from my perspective, was "BANG….(hit in the left rear wheel, count to 3-one thousand as I caught it and slid up-track) then…BANG again (now spinning sideways, in front of a pack of cars at the exit of Oak Tree). "Great…just great" and "That was uncalled for", I thought. Thanks to the following pack for not drilling me. Two of the harder hits I've had in enduros, actually.

The key to enduros is patience. Saw that in the HART 1 car…saw it in the HIPPI SRF (btw…congrats to JD & the HIPPI's, too…always happy to make a hole in traffic for your guys). Keep the car out of the pits and you'll finish well, regardless of how fast you're going. At the 2006 (?) NL 12 hour, we finished 3rd overall / 1st SM, in a car that was certainly slower most of the SM field, simply following two basic rules: "Don't fall off the track" and "Don't hit anything". In the intermittent wet that year, everyone else seemed to forget that.

And now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

John may not have just fallen off the turnip wagon, but he does smell like cabbage.

During my "diagnose the broken subframe stint" I passed 4-5 Miatas, but shortly after that the subframe went from cracked and flexing to completely disconnected.

Due to the vibration the mirrors were worthless and I was doing all I could to stay on track, especially under braking and in LH'ers. I apologize for any offenses committed during those two laps. I sort of remember boning the Harding car and one of the white Miatas in the Carousel, and then boning the other 2-3 cars in Turn 12 as the car tried to dive in front of everyone under braking.

I was in the car 5 hours or so, and I didn't have any issues with anyone.

Notes: When the RF camber bolt pocket breaks away from the subframe the car wants to dive left under braking. This perplexed me initially, but the tie rod is on the front of the knuckle, so when the RF wheel flexes outward/rightward under braking, it "steers" inward/leftward moreso. In left handers the camber pocket tries to tuck in under the subframe, thus needing more and more steering input to keep turning left. This is why the car dove left under braking, but also needed "full crossed elbows" steering input in LH-ers.

Harry Manning said he has broken 2-3 subframes in this location. We all should be checking around the welds of the camber and caster pockets as part of our maintenance checks. Unexplained drift in front toe settings is the first/easiest measured symptom.

Hey John, I knew I hit a white Miata, I guess it was not #83! So I am glad we get to clear the air.

After the first bump I was fighting for control, the second bump was, from my perspective, two cars both a little out of control. We were both in trouble at that point.

uhhh, that's two cars out of control as a result of ONE car out of control in the first place by the sounds of it. [Confused]
