I've searched and can't find a reason why the RX8 and the Miata compete against each other in this series? (I'm sure it's a simple reason) I believe both cars are in the ST class. Why isn't the RX8 modded up to the GS class? Seems that it would have more performance potential than the Miata. [Confused]

Sorry guys, I need a break from all the ECU mumbo jumbo, makes my head hurt. [Big Grin]

Here's some history:

The RX-8 was a competitive ST car a few years ago, and won a championship. It is pretty well maxed out to the allowable ST rules at this point. It would not be a competitive GS car without significant engine modifications - which is not the intent of the series.

BSI brought the MX-5 into the series, because they were running MX-5 Cup at the time and if I had to guess, they figured they could make the car competitive in ST. They didn't have a lot of success, but Freedom took over the cars the following year and with a lot of $$$ and a huge amount of engine modifications the car is competitive.

I believe both cars are on their way out - with the MAZDASPEED3 replacing them as one of the top cars in the series that can compete with the HP numbers that the other front-runners are getting.

First person to make some kind of direct correlation to the 1.6 vs 99 drama gets a free set of corded Continental tires.

Todd,

Thanks for the history. That clears it up. If SPEED would televise more of the series I'd probably know this information already.

The RX8 in the Rolex series is all Tube-frame and not much to do with a street car right? Low that triple rotor sound though!

Tim - Too tall? Cowl Induction hood for the Miata???

as always, spot on ... even though you were racing a Honda at the time [Razz]
note though, The RX-8 is STILL competetive today in the Conti ST class, witness Jameson Riley at Daytona ...
there are a few 8's out there that can still run up front at the long tracks.
The 1.6 vs '99 comparison is very similar to the MX-5 vs MazdaSpeed3 situation in Conti St ...
light, nimble, awesome brakes, little torque but flys at the top end, got to drive them on the razors edge to go up front ...
versus not so light but very stable platform, lots of HP, LOTS of torque, must breathe through a restrictor, 'electronic' games already in play [duck] , costs mucho dinero to buy new but Mazda pays mucho dinero for win-place-show. That about covers it huh? Don't want no corded tires, thankyou.
[Wink]

Best of luck to you in your i-moto MS 3 debut this weekend at Homestead, but will be first rootin for the young fast gun in the little blue MX-5 and the FSU high hurdler in the little green MX-5.
[thumbsup]

If oil pan allows, move motor mounts.

If oil pan in the way, use dry sump.

If dry sump still does not clear, can you lay it over like the BMW M10?

Cowl Hoods look neat in a cheezy way.

I think Team MER is working on a conversion now (can anyone confirm)? Might be more interesting than the LS1 conversion.

Yes, the Rolex GT RX-8 is a tube frame chassis - it shares the same rotary engine (x3) as the street version and you are right, it is an amazing sound!

Carlos, it was actually a Cobalt back then, before I had learned the Zen Zen of the Zoom Zoom! [Smile]

I predict the MX-5 will have a strong showing at Homestead. The Conti race will be a yellow flag crashfest with 74 cars on track.

Unfortunately, we will only have the first i-Moto MS3 for Homestead, so I'm going to be back in the ST RX-8 (in addition to the GT RX-8), this time driving with Jose. The car was 200# heavy at Daytona and will still be super heavy for Homestead - I'm told it ate a few boxes of Krispy Kremes while it was sitting in mothballs for 18 months - but hopefully we can still sneak it into the top 5 with good "strategery".

Any wagers on where the top MS3 will finish?

I just ran Homestead with Chin for the first time. I had a blast but I can't imagine 74 cars on that track at once. Good time to own a body shop.

yup Joe ... even with the initial split start, gonna be interesting as soon as the first FCY comes out ... betcha within 5 minutes [flamed]

Todd; sorry to hear your i-moto MS3 will not be ready for Homestead, but make sure Joesee drinks a cafecito shot before going out to qualify ... worth a second a lap for sure, will qualify top ten and out of the 'kill zone' on lap 1. If he gives you that RX8 inside the top ten at the hour mark, you will be on the podium!!

Sean; 12th sounds about right, don't think those cars have yet been cleared for combat missions by ground control. As mr Trohmblay continues filling the grid, by mid season the 'Tower' should allow them to start shooting down the enemy instead of these early season recon flights.
MX5's and RX8's must carry the Flag for the time being
[scratchchin]
good luck to all the SM'ers at Homestead, there are a ton of them racing this weekend, but only one pulling double duty both in Rolex and Conti

[thumbsup]
