everyone should send your ideas to the SMAC/CRB... We really do want the best for the class...

SMAC hat off... we don't need to split the class IMHO... Too many classes already...

Never made mention of 'fast lap' or 'right" hands. I can only judge off what I know and what I have seen first hand. ( just like everyone else) I know I raced Rich Weise for years, we were always tight one way or the the other. We were no different at Road America? Since then the 1.6 is lighter, the 99 heavier and the only real contender to show up since has been Shawn, so for me, it is hard to agree with the 1.6 can't win there group. The guys that should be complaining are the 94/97 guys? What tracks do they shine at?

This absolutely not an attack on Shawn or his driving.

Jim, I agree that Rich Weise is a top notch driver and that his car was very well prepped. He ran some national races at RA in his car and to my knowledge he was never on the pole, never led a lap and never won. I don't believe a 1.6 can lead at RA being chased by well driven '99's and in order to win you have to lead. He did win and post high finishes on other shorter tracks.

We can make the cars more similar in terms of weight, handling and power but it seems nobody can agree how to do this and it's also not clear if the SMAC and CRB are intent on doing this.

If we're limited to weight and restriction as adjustments and if the goal is to make the cars as similar in performance as possible then I would make changes to handicap the cars similar to this:

1.6 with no changes is the lightest with the least power and has a handling disadvantage with the older platform that is offset by the lighter weight.

Restrict the '99 so that it makes less horspower than the 1.8 and reduce the weight to 2400. Result is a car with the 2nd best power and with the handling and aero advantage of the newer platform.

Leave 1.8 at 47mm and reduce the weight to 2375. Result is a car with the best power but handling disadvantage of the older platform and more weight than the 1.6.

This should bring the cars closer together than they are now regardless of the track.

None, even with the new plate and front bar... and while we're at it, I'm disappointed Coello in the 1997 didn't get torn down (no offense, he is obviously a great driver) because I'm curious to see how he did it.

Sunbelt did it, suspect per rules, they run squeaky clean and super prepared.

If we don't want to allow the 1.6L guys to change to 1.8L, then how about an overbore allowance, a 1.8 conversion, getting rid of the MAF, getting a Zoloft prescription, etc ?

Just trying to make "Mr. Hoover" happy !!

PS: I like Tiley's idea of equalizing weights. Us 1.6L cars with FB pilots are too heavy to make weight.

I built 18 1.6s that are all still running and the NE folks start 100 1.6s each weekend in SSM (the class that made the 1.6 fun again).

Tim Buck said (CRB meeting at RO) there was 2500ish kits sold and thought over 2000 actual SMs. SO, 2000ish - 35 99s?

Not sure what that list proves other than the 99 is pretty much dominating inspite of being a small percentage of the total cars out there.

The super sweep keeps track of all national particpants, I only did the first 100. Not sure that it says anything? But I don't think the 1.6 majority in national racing opinion is as accurate as many of you believe it to be? The next 100 could be entirely different, if someone else wants to waste some of their time, they can go ahead and decifer it [Big Grin]

For what it's worth. I was sitting in the stands at Canada for the SM race. With the first yellow there, I counted six passes, under the yellow, as the group came through.

The thilly theason has begun (two months ago)

In deciding which car to build, I recommend a 1.9l, guaranteed to be competitive. [Wink]

Why not eliminate all 1990-2005 cars from Spec Miata entirely and start over with the '06+ cars? There are plenty of dirt tracks and figure-8's for the old cars to compete on, and they'll probably end up doing less bodywork! But the scrutineering might be more intense than it was at the runoffs, make sure you're not running any o' them "cheater" fuel injectors when you're supposed to have sidedrafts...

Maybe if you knew how to wheel a car you could pass under yellow and get away with it? It's called racecraft, dude. Learn some. If you're not sideways in the air going over a bridge and landing in the grass, passing everyone under an FCY you're too slow!!! [rolling on floor laughin]

Enjoyed watching this thread and thought the best post was AG's a bit back and that was "Yawn"...

My resolution this year was not to argue with people on the innerwebs. Only took me a bit to realize that it was not going to get me anywhere...

That said, anyone that can say the 99 isn't the car to have at RA is a liar or stupid or both. I don't want to let the facts get in the way, but the only 1.6 cars that I know of were piloted by guys that had one in the garage and didn't have the choice of getting in a 99 for the big show. Shawn is the exception as I am sure they could have fielded a 99, but made the choice to beat their heads against the wall one more time. On that point, what does it say that he could get fast lap but was no where near the pointy end? Maybe they cheated it up for the big race? Maybe they found a wall of cars to run behind for one lap that actually allowed them to draft? You have to wonder why Shawn didn't have that draft in qualifying? Maybe because the only way a 99 drafts with a 1.6 is if the 1.6 happened to get lucky and qually behind a train of 99 cars? Anyway you slice it the 1.6 is an underdog at RA. The one thing that I have not heard anyone argue is that the 1.6 is the car to have or is really competitive at RA. So that is now a given. That is a fact and everyone knows it.

To get in front of the prep argument, if it was possible to prep a 1.6 to be a better car than the 99 or the 1.8 someone would have. Heck, Drago would have lost another 100 pounds and found a way to make weight if the car could have been an over dog. I have no doubt about that. (BTW, props to Jim on the mega diet. WTG!)

So that leaves us where? In the last few years we have taken weight off the 1.6. Allowed track changes. Now allowing sub frames. Changed the shock hats. Sure I am missing a couple of things, but all of those changes have yet to make the car even close to an equal RA car. When a larger heavier car consistently beats a lighter car there is only one answer that explains it. It doesn't matter if it is Grand Am, ALSM, etc. That heavier car must have a power advantage. Or every lighter car is either a $hit box or piloted by a crappy driver. I don't think either of those things are true. So...

I don't buy the please send us your letters deal. Cams and flywheels are not the answer. There are ways to slow the 99's down and shave the torque curve. Exhaust is number one and then you play with restrictors and weight. I don't need to send a letter for the SMAC guys to know that. They already do.

The real question is why two or three years removed we are still having this discussion? My guess is because no one is going to do anything even though they know the answer and could effect the change.

Therefore I will join my buddy Antonio and say "Yawn..." [Frown]

Casey, I think you sum it up pretty well. Thanks.

Problem is that BOD is pretty clear that they don't want to make any changes based on runoff results, so the yawning is starting to pop my jaw out of place.

SMAC/CRB get beat down by a lot of folks when they try to come up with a solution that costs any more than 2 35 session toyos. That is where it becomes an issue of the serious 8+ race a year drivers who like to visit all the tracks within a decent driving radius versus the 3- race a year drivers, and just like with the compliance fee, these folks tends to win because there's a good chance they make up a lot of numbers in this class.

I guess it becomes a matter of moving forward or just riding out the last days of a class as it smolders in the sunset. I'm exagerating of course, but as a amateur racer committed to this sport and the club, I sure wish we would go back to moving forward (while still trying to keep this a budget-concience class of course).

So if the Run Offs moves in 2012 to a "handling" track and the 1.6 starts to dominate, then what? Reverse all the changes because one (major) race a year is at a different track?

I'm sure the 1.6 owners will rush to the aid of the 99s to level playing field. What you fear might happen IF the race moves is exactly what the 1.6 owners are actually experiencing.

Yawn indeed!

Isn't that what we're trying to fix here? Finding a way to equal out the torque curves a bit so that moving to a different track DOESN'T favor one car or another.

The runoffs will remain at RA through 2012. SCCA hasn't even begun the process of developing an RFP for the next location. The RA contract was a three year deal with a one year renewal option.

There is one option for that... A single car class. Second best would be allow 1.8 engines in 1.6 cars. Neither are popular. ANY OTHER FIX, is just that, A FIX or PATCH.
We have parity, now we are if we are searching for equality.. That s another story all together. We also DO NOT make adjustments for the Runoffs and Runoffs only. Surveys were sent out after lat years runoffs and very, very few wanted cars adjusted for the Runoffs primarily. That is against my personal philoshy as that is all I really care about? [Frown]

It is possible to make the cars more the same and it can be done with weight and plates. The '99 could get a smaller plate and less weight to make it perform more like the other cars regardless of the track. Close the HP and weight gaps and we have even better parity.
