Good lesson. We spend a lot of time practicing driving the car, but very little (or no) time practicing how to get out of the car fast, release the fire extinguisher, etc.

Glad to see you got out OK, and what seemed relatively little damage to what could have been.
Have you determined what the cause of the fire was?

Holy cow! Cool thinking to drive right up to a worker. I would have probably bailed into the infield. What was the cause? It looked like it was coming up through the shifter.

Wasn't there another car on fire in the eases? This weekend?

Reminds me.... did the CRB ever approve replacing the shift boot with nomex? I don't think so.

#4 blew out the wall, they found a tube about 14mm x 38mm still hot behind the car.

I didn't know I was on fire until the flag station at pit in so it was 8 to 10 sec. to the fire guys to put me out.

My fire extiguisher, just the bottle, not a system was on the right side of the shifter, other side of the fire.

When you said your motor blew up and caught on fire and you had to get out of the car i must have missed the part about fire inside the car! You sure were calm when I saw you 30 minutes later...so glad you avoided an even more serious situation! As mentioned, this will be a good reminder for all to plan in your mind for these things...we will for sure!

With all that happened, I had a great time, 1st time on track Thursday, what a ride.
After all that I locked my keys in my truck.
I was more pissed about that and getting out of my hot suit.

Good reason to keep your car not greasy. Not saying yours was. Looked like the workers fire extinguisher did not work at first.

Here's my in car footage from Saturday's race. Contains some good moves, some not so good, and some downright bad. But the entertainment quality is excellent.

Wow! You were brave to drive it that far! I came up on your left at the turn-in to 10.....I thought we were going into the corner side by side, then looked in my mirror and saw the entire underside of your engine in flames! Wow!

Darin,

Thanks for posting. Great drive! That was very sporting to give Brian the spot back for tapping him in T11, and Brian too for his acknowledgment after the point-by. Club racing at it's best!

DANG, glad you're okay!!

I don't want to make light of what happened to you but a single-shot extinguisher just are not ideal. Fire systems are cheap now.

Here is a 6 nozzle system, the whole thing weighs about 20lbs

Again, the best thing is that you are okay!! [thumbsup]

Yes, I'm getting one. Tom Tuner was my instructor for school a few years ago. He was driving the pace car that day. He makes them and gave me the lecture.

Nice drive and sportsmanship by Darin in the first race - my rear tires went away about 20 mins in from carrying the extra weight around and Darin was going to get me one way or the other. A well deserved win on his part. Interesting to see how the cars compare at a handling track like Sears.

We learned from that race for Sunday and tightened the car up - it was a bit slower but combined with some strategy gave me a car I could still drive at the end of the race. Is it in the SM setup guide that Daniels says "late race handling wins races"? Not true on Saturday but true on Sunday!

This was my first spec miata festival party since I stopped racing in 06 and I had a great time, lots of fun. I understand Dr. Dan was responsible for the ribs? They were awesome! Nice drive on Sunday too!

Good fun this weekend and best of all, the car ended up in one piece for Dean's Nationals!

Here's my Saturday SM race, mostly featuring Tupper, Spike (Steve Padfield) and Dion.

On the spectator video nice ballet with Dion...very [Cool]

Thanks, Ron. I try to be smoove.

Hey, if everyone hasn't heard, Dean won the Mustang Challenge driver shootout yesterday so he'll be getting a seat in a pro car this weekend at Miller! Wish him luck!

Here's my Spec Miata Festivus race vid:

http://www.vimeo.com/14729421

I think the action ends pretty early, so you probably only need to watch the first 1/4 of the race. My 1st Sunday race was more exciting, but the video's not up yet. In that one, Spike is again very polite and lets me by at T10. Heehee.

Here are my other race videos. I had great side to side battles with a number of people early on in the races. After things spread out I would catch up to Laura but she was unflappable, driving very consistently and I finished behind her in each race....
