From the (draft, unpublished at the time of posting) 2010 SFR-SCCA road racing supplemental rules; changes italicized:

quote:
9. SPEC MIATA T (SMT): Spec Miata T will run under the National rules, GCR Spec Miata Category Specifications (SMCS) Section 9.1.8 with the following exceptions/additions.

For the first three Regional race weekends, Spec Miata T drivers must use either Toyo Proxes RA-1 tires or Toyo Proxes R888 tires 205x50x15 to qualify and/or receive regional points, trophies, and victory flag. Any Spec Miata T driver not using the required spec tire, regardless of qualifying time, must start at rear of SMT field.

After the third Regional race weekend, Spec Miata T drivers must use Toyo Proxes RA-1 tires 205x50x15 to qualify and/or receive regional points, trophies, and victory flag. Any Spec Miata T driver not using the required spec tire, regardless of qualifying time, must start at rear of SMT field.

SMCS Item 9.1.8.C.4.a.3: Also allowed: Ground Control coil-over kit 5030.04.

SMCS Item 9.1.8.C.7.e: Detachable hardtop manufactured by Snugtop may also be used.

The supps are pretty much in their final form, but I will update this post and note any changes should they occur.

So apparently you can run any tire you want as long as you start at the back and don't care about getting scored. Could be fun as a goof.

I was hoping they would allow 888's for the entire season. Then we'd really find out the comparison, and whether the 888 was really as evil as people made them out to be.

BTW, I'm thinking all the wisdom about breaking in 888's will apply to the new RA1's, as they almost certainly use the 888 compound.

I'm pretty sure the rule about starting at the back was in effect last season too. You can't score points, or win trophies, but you are allowed to run.
Cheers, Paul

I think it's always been the case that you can run alternate tires but start at the back and not score points.
