I've tried to change my avatar picture but when I go to that screen in my profile I get a couple of boxes, a couple of buttons, and and area to select an avatar, but none are shown except a box with an X. And, no upload button to upload my own. I've got to be doing something wrong, any suggestions?

There's a minimum number of posts required before you can have a custom avatar. I think it was 31, but I could well be wrong. Search for posts by "Mike" on the topic of avatars.

I'll have to look, the old Avatar gallery didn't survive the server move... think they got packed under the eggs.

Jim is correct, you must be a regular Member which is at 31 posts/replies. At that time you can use a custom avatar.

I will be adding the ability to upload avatars in the near future.

Meaning they'll be stored on SM.com instead of remotely? Good feature.

Once you upload it, you then must copy/paste the URL ONLY (remove the [IMG] codes) of the avatar into change avatar screen and press select this avatar.

If it works how long will it take to show up?
Or should it come up right away?

If it works it works immediately. Looking at your account there is no reason for it not to work. You have more than 31 posts and your permissions for uploading an avatar are correct.

I found the problem with your account. Seems when we make changes to accounts (Donations or Drivers Only access) the default setting for uploading changes to 'Do Not Permit' unless we stipulate otherwise.

Corrected this issue on your account and will look into the underlying problem.

I've been having troubles with updating profile as well (not related to avatar). It's possible that the update itself isn't getting done.

Hey Mike I tried mine a couple of times just like the steps say above and I can't even get the picture to show up in the little box.
Could the picture be in the wrong format,or is it something i'm doing wrong?

Be careful, the URL is often case-sensitive (if the image server runs a brain-dead OS).

Oh, well.

I entered the Avatar selection screen on your account.
I input the url to the picture you uploaded.
I clicked SET URL.
I clicked SELECT THIS AVATAR
I clicked UPDATE PROFILE

Viola [Smile]

Not sure what would cause it to not work. Enough people seem to change their avatar to suggest the software does work correctly 98% of the time.

If you can offer up any additional information that may shed some light on why you are having problems I will look into it further. At this point I do not detect a problem.

Its possible it is simply to large (in kilobytes). Post a url to the picture so I can look into it.

Ok found and fixed the initial permissions being set at account creation and when we edit profiles in the Control Panel to default to "Use Group Permissions".

However, this will not correct the permissions for those that have created accounts since I've added the ability to upload.

If you are a full Board member (31 posts/replies or more) and are denied permission when attempting to upload an avatar please PM MIKE or EMAIL me (mike@specmiata.com) so I can correct your account.

Mike, I changed my screen name. Was experimenting a little to see if I could put an emoticon up there (it didn't work). But when I tried to change the name back again, the program said the name was already reserved by "another user". Of course the other user would be -- er, me. So I thought I'd try a two-step switch, by going to an interim name (that's how the colon got after my name now). Then (and I'm not sure I remember the sequence now) I tried to change to a dot at the end, and when I pressed Update the progam told me I entered the wrong PASSWORD. Of course I was already logged on, and it didn't even ASK for a password!

If you could put my name back to normal, and get the account to where it would take my changes, I'd even update my e-mail address, which was the other thing I've been trying to do through all this.

Does this thing run on <...barf...> Linux, perchance? [Wink]

My guess is that link only works for you while you are logged into Yahoo because I can't get to it... and if I can't then the forum can't.

No linux boxes here. Fixed your name.

As for more stable ... hard to say ... as this board has been running for 5 years on first Windows NT and now Windows 2K3 and I don't recall it ever needing a reboot without me having done something to cause it [Smile]

Thanks Mike, Seems odd that it would show it as added to my profile if it couldn't get it - but then I am generally lost on this stuff.

Do the photos have to be on the web to use as avitar? Couldn't figure out another way to post one. I tried the upload function but didn't get any results.

The "junior member = no avatar" rule seems unfair / discriminatory. Shouldn't all members be equal in a Community forum like this? Or are some members more equal than others?
