Not sure what you mean about "thumb nail" of your choice. Your avatar is loaded from another web site (any one you choose), and the image is displayed in its original size. It's up to you to use or create one of an appropriate size.
OR, you can choose one of the "canned" ones here on the site, but who would want to do THAT?

I could be wrong about the number, but it sounds like something not right. Drop a PM to "Mike" (the site admin) -- he's the one with the keys to the castle, I just get to taste-test the moat.
BTW, the program may have sensed your desire to emulate Bernard, which is now prevented automatically by the software.
After 10 Posts or replies you become a full fledged "member" of the website and should then be able to use the UPLOAD AVATAR link in the Avatar Select Screen.
Some older accounts have upload ability disabled due to a glitch and have to be manually set.
Visit MY PROFILE to select/change/upload your avatar.
I can't seem to get this avatar thing working either...
It allows me to upload (3 files so far), then I presume you have to copy and paste the URL of the up loaded jpg from the 'Upload Manager' into the 'Use Custom URL:' field, but when I do, it shows a busted image...
I'm pretty sure I'm within the size limitations... maybe not, so please advise pixel dim. and file size limits... the last one I've tried is 85x100 and 13.2Kb...
Could you check into that please?
On a similar topic, what happens to pics placed in the 'Your Picture:' field... where do they show up, and can you use an uploaded file from the 'Upload Manager', or does it have to be located 'off-site'?
You have to SET URL then click SELECT THIS AVATAR to actually save it.
The Picture showas up if someone views your profile. You can upload it as well if you like. I cleared up all the avatars you uploaded except the one in use atm.

Hmmm... I thought that's what I'd done... c'n'p the URL of the chosen pic from the 'Upload Manager' into the 'Use Custom URL:', but when I hit SET URL, it just showed a 'busted' image in the box, so SELECT THIS AVATAR didn't do much good...
In any case the c'n'p, followed with the aforementioned steps seems to work now... I noted that in addition to removing the extra uploads, you changed the name of the remaining one, which is fine... did any of that have anything to do with it...

OK Mike,
I've tried a couple of times before, but always went away frustrated, and without an avatar. I figure I'll hit you up this time.
I go to "Edit Profile" and scroll down to the "Avatar Image" section. There is nothing in the image box, so I click on "Select a different avatar image". In the new box, I put in the location of my jpg image in the "Use Custom URL" box, and click on "Set URL". At this point my image shows up in the avatar box (out of proportion, but I'll deal with that later). I then click on "Select this avatar" and I return to the "Edit Profile" screen where the image shows in the "Avatar Image" section. I scroll down and click on "Update Profile". After this I check my postings and no avatar shows up, and if I go back to my profile, there is no avatar listed. What am I doing wrong, other than thinking I know something about computers?

Dang computers...
Thanks,

It definitely could have been the filename for sure. I renamed it because I had to type in the url manually

Mike,
We may be making progress. I am now getting an image to stay in the "Avatar Image" section of my profile. It is probably too large, so I probably need your help here. The URL is http://www.motorpride.com/FriarSpeed/SMavt.jpg
Thanks,
Jerry

Mike,
Thanks for the "crop job" on my avatar. It has taken some time, but I now have an avatar! It was easier getting my competition license though. Along that line, I have seen several individuals have similar problems in loading avatars. This sounds like the perfect subject for FAQ with detail instructions. I know there are other SM'ers out there that are as computer illiterate as me (if they would only admit it).
Thanks for being patient.

There are problems with the filenames. When selecting an avatar, rename them something short, with no spaces. You can simply right click the picture and select rename.
I think that is the problem with the ones doing it correctly, but it disappearing after hitting update.

Even dentists can have overbyte.
jim
PS: The image straight out of the camera is too big, both in width and in file size. What you'll need to do is use any photo editing software to shrink the photo down to 130 pixels or less in width. That in turn will probably also cut the file down to under 50k bytes. If it doesn't get small enough, try reducing the "quality" setting when you save the file.
File names can pose a problem, esp if they have spaces.. simplify the name making it fit the dos standard of 8.3 ... 8 letters period three letter extension. That always fixes the problem.
Corrected Jenkinsbrothers34k.jpg by renaming it to mjenkins.jpg
Gah! Its 341 pixels wide Removing it... please correct it and reupload it using a shorter name.

It will never show up there. Once the upload is finished it gives you the url (remove the characters and just use the http://path to avatar)... copy paste that into the box at the bottom and click use this avatar.

Just an FYI for those who may be having problems with their avatar.
I was just having problems again and discovered that my .JPG was in CAPS. The program didn't like it. Once I changed it to .jpg everything went just fine.

That one varies with the image name. It's not the lower case that's magic, it's matching the case of the image file. Worse yet, it doesn't depend on the SM server, but the one where the image is located. Just make sure you put the image name in exactly as it appears wherever the image is stored.
