Todd,

I'm ready [Big Grin]

I was looking forward to racing against your purple 99. I think it would be great to see how the 1.6 cars will do against a top 99 car and driver with NASA's new rules. Same track, same drivers, could have been a good real world test. Hope you find a way up here.

Just for the record, had fun racing with you at VIR.

Oh and I'm not making fun of your purple Miata as I have been racing a Prowler purple Factory Five Cobra for the past 5 years. I get a lot of crap for my choice of color but I like purple and was actually rooting for you and your purple Miata to win at the 2007 NASA Nationals.

Of course I'll be rooting for a yellow car this year [Wink]

My video of the Sunday race:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8890817082738171040&hl=en

Horrible lap 1 - I think I slid sideways about half the distance from turn 2 to turn 3 with 30 cars behind me. Then an off on turn 4 AND turn 10, all on the same lap!!! Yikes...

The restart was good for me though, came from 7th to 3rd in one lap.

Got as high as 2nd but then contact with a brand new MX5 in the entrance to hog pen caused me to get passed on exit. (10:45 on video)

Last lap - had locked up 3rd but decided to give Brian Cates an early Xmas gift by going off in 10 (again).

Sam,

Don't feel bad, I let you, Ellis and Collins go by while I was politely waiting for that blue Honda to give me a lane.

Good agressive drive, love that push/spin with the red Mx-5. (Looked kind of like one of Devin's moves, like at turn 4 last year when he stuck his nose in there and turned you around!)

After all the cars I had spinning in front of me that weekend, I was being pretty conservative and happy to get out of there with my car in one piece.

Haven't seen lap times but you might have been the quickest out there in that mess of a track.

See you at CMP

Wow! What a weekend!

That was my first time at VIR and first time racing with NASA and I had a great time. The race on Saturday was a ton of fun. Sunday's race was crazy! After avoiding my 5th or 6th accident I decided to go into self preservation mode and just get the thing home in one piece. That was my first rain race ever and it was quite eye-opening! I've got a couple of good videos I will upload in the next 24 hours - one of the start until full course yellow and one of a huge mess in roller coaster/hog pen.

Sam - it was great to meet you this weekend. You drove the wheels off that car in Sunday's race! You went off in left hook and still passed me before the uphill esses on the first lap.

Not a good weekend for me! I was the red miata at the bottom of hogpen with a busted RF after hitting a spinning civic. I also didn't like Sam's video after he hit the red MX5, and was being passed going 2 wide through hog pen with me, a fire rescue and tow truck sitting right in the path if it went bad. Was there no yellow there?

Great video, darn fast for being in the wet. You handle going off at Southbend better than I have in the past. That dip right where you came back on has ruined a many a front mounted Porsche radiators. Funny how much better the miata takes it.

There was a waving yellow at the entry to the roller coaster when you came up on the trucks. Question is was the next station manned and if so, was it waving a flag?

Derek, thanks for the compliment. I must say I hate to admit it but I'm getting better at going off of South Bend because I've been doing it so much. I learned what not to do after I did this in my C5 Corvette...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fqfv2tYhkDk

As for the waving yellow, I'm embarrassed to say that I never saw it at the entrance to roller coaster. I didn't see if there was one at hog pen as I was occupied in plowing the MX5. According to the MX5's crew he moved right to let me go by but they thought Ellis got into him on his right side which is what put him in front of me. I've love to see Ellis' video if he has one to find out if thats what really happened or not.

I do feel bad for the red MX5. I filed a contact report and he didn't so he automatically got DQ'ed. Turns out he had no damage from our contact but had doughnuts on his right side. I probably should have just tried him on the straight as there is no way 3 of us could have made it through hog pen side by side anyway.

Sam

The MX5 is fine, the contact was directly on my left rear tire. So I didn't file a report as I had no damage. This is my first NASA event and guess I didn't follow the rules on contact reports. If you look at the video there is a waving white flag at the entrance to the roller coaster, I don't believe there was a yellow and didn't see one during the race. I choose to check up and not pass the car in front even though they had given me racing room, as I was unsure where the slow moving vehicle might be. It's not very wide through the roller coaster so didn't want to push it given all the issues on the track that day. I was waiting to pass on the straight.

Not all NASA regions are the same when it comes to contact reports. If I recall correctly from the drivers meeting at VIR in February, Grumpy instructed us to only file a contact report if the damage didn't pass the 50/50 rule. Basically if you can see the damage 50 foot away at 50 mph. Or if the contact resulted in loss of position and you feel like the other driver was at fault.

That said, I think NASA Mid-Atlantic would prefer us to try to work it out amongst ourselves as drivers if it was a racing incident and the damage passes the 50/50 rule. If both drivers agree to let it go, then don't bother the officals with all the paperwork.

Now not every NASA region operates like that. I know in the Ohio region we were instructed to file the paperwork, no matter how small an incident. I had someone file a contact report a few years ago at Mid Ohio for a very minor tire rub with no change in position. I didn't even remember the incident after the session was over. I didn't know the other driver had filed a report until it was trophey time and I got bumped back a few positions. I tried to appeal to the Race Director but he would not listen or even agree to look at my video since I had missed my time for filing a report. I had to file a formal complaint with NASA against the Race Director. I sent my video to CA and they ended up reversing the decision of the Race Director and restored my finishing position.

From my last 5 years racing with NASA Mid-Atlantic, I have found them to be very reasonable when it comes to contact reports. If it's truly a racing incident and no magor damage and both parties are ok, leave it alone. If you feel the other driver is truely a problem and a danger to others, then definately file a report.

My advice is to always try to talk to the other driver first, offer him a beer and talk it out if possible. [Big Grin]

I'm of two minds on this. I agree with Brian that small incidents should be handled between drivers but here's the thing.

While last year at the nationals, my main push was for thorough tech and we did a decent job with that. However, the amount of contact sucked. Completely. So this year I'm adding that to my hotbutton items for nationals. That means I want people used to filling out the contact forms.

I will be asking for contact forms if a bug hits your windshield at Nationals. If the bug doesn't file one, he'll be dq'd. Or asked to leave the event depending on the severity of the spot and how hard it is to clean off.

So, I think if you have contact and it leaves a mark or changes the outcome of the race in any way, you should be filling out paperwork.

But the bug could be cleaned off easily and probably wouldn't show up at 50' and 50MPH. So if the bug doesn't file, what do we gain? [Big Grin]

So the contact report thing must have been in the supps, no? Seems weird that different regions handle it differently. Stinks that the guy who gets spun (by the guy who went off 3 times in 2 minutes!) gets DQ'd...no?

I agree with Brian Cates.

Grumpy told us at the Stinger meeting in tower in February at the VIR to only file a contact report if the damage did not pass the NASA 50/50 rule and involved no loss of position.

No visual damage 50 feet away at 50 mph no contact report would be required.

I don't race NASA, so please excuse my ignorance for these cars, but I am just wondering if someone could break down which year car these guys drive? I'm interested to see how the '99s compare in NASA to SCCA with the extra weight.

Thanks

Passing an out of class car under yellow, I think.

I think those are right, please correct me if I'm wrong. Also, Leverone finished 2nd on track on Saturday but was disq for being underweight, I think. He was driving a 99-up car.

Never seen a 96-97 do that well, very impressive.

I'm in a 1.6L and I felt like all the car types were very well matched to me. I'd be hard pressed to think that it could get much more even on the prep level that we are at in regional NASA competition. We'll have to see at the NASA Nationals to be sure though.

I've talked to some front runners that race in SCCA only and asked them what "the" car they would be for the NASA rule set. I got varying opinions. That coupled with the results we are seeing makes me think that it must be pretty darn close.

Car models at VIR seemed pretty even to me in NASA trim.

Dean Copeland was driving his ass off. I didn't see that he had any power advantage. Just big balls [Big Grin]

We had a faster time in the dry then Dean on Saturday, but he was out front alone and I was drafting Nick Leverone's 99 which was probably good for a 1/2 second.

I think Dean will be the guy to beat this season in NASA Mid-Atlantic. He's got a good car but my guess he would be up front in any of the top running cars, regardless of year.

Dean drove the same car at the ARRC last year and did not have the power of the top 99's, same with me in a 1.6, couldn't come close to even hanging with the big dog 99's on the straights in 2007 SCCA trim. But with the new 2008 NASA rules and tighter enforcement I think NASA has got it pretty darn close.

Should be a fun year!

See you guys at CMP
