If its as simple as throwing the stock intake on, then I have a car to rent if someone needs a 1.6. Car is fast ask Mike Bell, set up by the JP3.
Would probably take more than an air box for most 1.6s (Weight = 2300lbs, Spark plugs = NGK BKR6E-11, Ignition wires = stock NGK, requires Mazda Motorsports exhaust, etc.,)

http://www.nasaproracing.com/rules/showroom_spec_miata_rules.pdf

Seems easy enough, add weight, exhaust and plug wires. Of course you would have to be rather tall and broad to fit well in my seat, but that can be overcome.

As Toby correctly pointed out I oversimplified the SM to SSM conversion - but I did it out of a genuine desire to see MORE 90-93's come get their mojo going against me and may the better driver win [Smile]

I'm sure somewhere there are plenty of stock exhaust parts laying around the shop!

I believe the rule reads that it has to have the "mazdacomp exhaust" so even if I put the stock exhaust on it is not compliant.

I may be misreading Michael but the stock exhaust is ok however you need to run the Mazda Muffler part 000-06-5425.

3.1.5. Exhaust System
3.1.5.1. Catalytic converter may be removed and replaced with the
replacement pipe part # 0000-06-5423. All other exhaust components
shall remain OEM stock
except for the required installation of Mazda
Motorsports exhaust part #0000-06-5425.

That is the part i was reading as you had to have the Motorspors exhaust. If we ran a stock muffler, i think it would be out of compliance.

Just got word from Dave Balingit, that if someone was to rent my 1.6 we could run it with a stock exhaust. Thanks for the help Dave.

On that note, Dave has been excellent on answering questions about upcoming events and working out the issues with NASA Texas.

Guys, Dave can't post here but he asked me to forward the following about SSM exhausts:

quote:
Can't reply on the specmiata formus, but we have raised the question of stock OEM exhaust on SSM. It will be looked at to reword, so for MSRH please feel free to have anyone interested use the OEM exhaust vs the mandated MazdaSpeed exhaust as the original exhaust meets the intent.

Guys;
Dave has been all over it... He's a good guy, give him some time and I know it will get sorted.

As far as the OEM exhaust from head-to-tail goes, technically it is not the spec part but I'd suppose it does not breathe as well as the Mazda Comp (0000-06-5425). Personally I see no problem with it for the first few events... After then I'd expect the rules to be more accepting of it [thumbsup]

Mike;
You're right, we need to make sure that everyone is registered. If we don't get more entries, we may get combined with another race group.

This is what I am running:

Eibach #5517.320
# Anti-Roll Bar Kit 1990-93 Miata MX-5
# Front Diameter: 24mm
# Rear Diameter: 15mm

It really did not help the 95, I may go back to the 27mm

NASA accepts SCCA licenses, has done so for several years now:

From the 2011 CCR:
14.1.4 Current SCCA license holders
Regional, National, Pro:
1. Submit a copy of their current SCCA license.
2. Submit a copy of their state driver’s license.
3. Submit the appropriate license fee.
4. Submit an Application for Competition License

No video but I do have some data. My fast lap this weekend in my 1.6 was 0.20 seconds faster than my 99 which I ran at the same track in November. I know running back to back on the same day would yield better comparisons but I only have a 1 car trailer. Weather was very similar in November.

Bottom line both cars are close in lap times at MSRH so it will be intersting to see the effects on the 99's lap time under the new NASA rules. My guess is a loss of 0.30 per lap at MSRH, probably less at faster tracks.

Gale,

Wouldn't it be more of a time loss at faster tracks where HP is more of a factor than the quantity of turns/mile at MSRH? I was thinking the NASA rules would really hurt the 99 at places like TMS, RA, the longer tracks

So this race the 99s were in the 2010 rules trim?

James,

This 1st NASA race at MSRH allowed the 99's to run under last years weight and plate due the the late arrival of the official 37MM plates.

You may be right on the difference at the faster tracks. We will see soon enough.

Gale,

Yea, it will shake out. All I have is dyno data so far. Maybe at the March TWS national I'll run a back to back run on the test day and see the on track difference. I guess I could do it at MSRH next week to if Ed remembers to bring his 37mm plate.

See you TWS. [Cool]

Exactly James...

The 37mm plate will hurt the '99 at TWS/TMS, not so nearly as much at MSRH. Horse power isn't the big factor at MSRH--the 60 lbs knocked off the '99 might actually get it close to equal lap time with the 2450 weight with big restrictor. Overall though, I am certainly of the opinion that they still need to take some measurable weight off the '99 in NASA trim to get it right--but their approach of closing the weight and hp+tq gap is just too logical [Smile] The NASA 94-97 needs to get slowed down too--probably smaller plate as opposed to more weight. )

Yes, they raced this past weekend at MSRH in old trim (big plate, big weight)...

Only problem with dropping more weight off the 99 is that some of us larger individuals won't be able to make the NASA 99 weight. I can strip about 30 lbs out of the car, but that would leave me about 37lbs heavy with one gallon of gas. I could loose 37 lbs but then I would make weight in my 1.6 and it would potentially be the better car at the faster tracks. Not to mention I would have to give up eating for 2 months.

I believe 25 SMs started the race, one of, if not the largest turnouts for a NASA Texas race in years.

Sat Race 1) Udell 1.6, Duarte 1.6, Haldeman 99, Collings 99, Corley 1.6.

Sat Race 2) Udell 1.6, Haldeman 99, Ott 1.6 (Started 27th), Corely 1.6, Duarte 1.6

Sun Race Collings 99, Kellerher 99, Udell, Mr The Tard" 1.6, Gabriel 99

Congrats to all.

Duly noted and corrected sir. By the way, nice finish on Sunday, and you said you didn't like the rain.
