Although I have seen only one race weekend this year, I am officially signed up for the nationals hoping to better my 45th position.

Anyone else signed up?

Tony,

Sorry I'm going to miss you. That was a kick in the pants last year.

I even got a '99, to see if that helps anything. But as they always say, "its the nut behind the wheel that makes the difference." Or in Johns case, The nut behind the wheel of the car that is pushing you down the straight.

We have never raced a National event...Can someone explain the format/scedule for the 4 day period. Are you allowed to test in the days prior to the event? Thanks in advance.

day 1- practice
day 2- qualify and race
day 3- qualify and race
day 4- The big race, starting position determined by average finish of previous two races.

This is how it was done at Mid-O so I assume it will the same in Utah.

Probably. Go to http://www.nasachampionships.com and see if that answers your questions about, well, the nasachampionships. [Big Grin] Then go to the Miller Motorsports Park site to look at test day info.

Not much at the NASA site (already checked). It looks like there are a couple "open" days on the calendar, but in karting they often prohibit testing the week prior to a national event. I was just wondering if a similar rule existed for NASA. I will give them a call. Thanks

Where are the Christians? They should be another 4 from So Cal.
Where are the Nor Cal contingent?

Tyler, The Mountain Region has a race and school in late August. But hopefully they will open up the track tuesday and wed.

No such rule. From what I gather there will be an open test day through NASA on Wednesday. Monday and Tuesday supposedly will offer some testing/coaching through the school at Miller. From what I read on nasaforums dot com, they are working on rolling out an announcement shortly.

July 31st - August 1st there will be an MPRA race on the outer loop it is a support race for Camping World West. Miller Park Racing Association is a local club racing series, we have been having 10-12 SM's a weekend and it would be great to get some more cars up here. It's under $300 for the weekend and your NASA or SCCA license is good.

Getting the lord's sponsorship might be easier than getting Al Gore to sponsor a polluting race car, but someone else managed to do that, too.

I've got my call in to Martha's Vineyard, hoping for someone even MORE powerful to come through for me...

As a competitor in all the NASA Nationals held at Mid Ohio (but not this year), I'm curious to know know many SM entrants the Miller venue drew. (Hopefully a full field)

I'll miss the event. It' was always well run and the competition was intense. Race hard and be safe.

Last year it was an honor to race against some of guys you read about from the eastern U.S. Now it will be great to race against the Western U.S. Its just too bad more of our regulars from Southern Cal can't make it.
With the current car count it looks that if I can finish the race I may increase my position from last year.

Let's be safe, have fun out there and aim to have every car finish (no DNFs).

A suggestion for our (sm) first drivers meeting: introduce or have each driver introduce themselves along with their specmiata.com login name.
I read so many posts, I begin to feel that I know you all, but have no clue what you look like in person.
Plus it will make it easier to find you when I need to apologise for the bonehead manuver I'm bound to make.

Now that the DNF has been brought up I'd like to give you all a heads up for the first lap.
With the long front straight and fast turn 1 with lots of room there aren't normally incidents here.
Turn 5 is a decreasing radius turn at the end of a long straight. We'll be coming in pretty quick and it's a lot easier to get bunched up here. So please no one try to be a hero and dive bomb for 5 positions here because the chances are you'll hit some one!!

Apex speeds are 50+ on the correct line but if you are on the inside of a large bunch it's more like 30+ coming down from 90+

Once we get through T5 we'll have spread out sufficiently that the chance of a "Big one" is greatly reduced.

Thanks Jon! Any incite like that is welcomed as for many of us it will be our first time on your track.
You know the lines, the notorious spots for going off, the spots known to shoot you across the track (if you do go off) and the locations for the most body damage.
Without giving away any secret lines please advise us on those types of corners.

All of them!! Slow down and you should be fine. [thumbsup]

J/K It's a really safe race track with road base at track height and big paved aprons on quite a few of the turns.

Jon;
Silly question - When running the Outer Loop & referring to turns beyond T6; are they named as T8, T9, and so one or does it jump to T16, T17 (like on the track map). Or, are the names (Dreamboat, Witchcraft, Wind-Up) used instead?

Most of us refer to the turns by number up to T6 after that we start using their names. So Yeah T6 into Witchcraft, attitudes, tooele, clubhouse, wind-up, release and back to straight.

Another thing as far as incidents go. History has shown that it is VERY difficult to hit a solid object here. Possible but rare. Instead incidents tend to involve car to car as a result of driver error. Not many places I can think of that will shoot you back across track unless once again "Drivers error".

John M. I personally numbers 1-6 then names for the rest on the outer loo, as numbers become confusing between the 4 different configs...

So T1, T2 -T6
Witchcraft
Attitudes
Tooele
Clubhouse
windup
release

but i'm slower than Jon and have time to say the corner names! [Big Grin]
