Danny:
Sad to say that list won't have my name on it. My (can you believe it) work got in the way! Good luck to everybody coming to NL. When I talked to Patti on Tuesday evening, there were roughly 15 SM's registered. I know that includes Dave Watts, Brian Post and Mark Bennet.

I wasn't there but I heard Brian Post had a bad wreck involving a T3 car in turn 4. I heard Brian's car was totaled, but Brian was able to walk around afterwards, but went to the hospital complaining of back pain, and confusion. I sure hope you're OK Brian. Anyboby else have an update?

Brian returned to the track yesterday afternoon, walking and talking, with no obvious injuries.

I saw the incident unfold as Shawn and Brian were in a battle for 2nd. It was a nasty spinning wreck that probably totaled the car.

The wreck was caused by an out of class s2000 which was in most peoples opinion should have not been in that position but it was, and it happened.

Brian was at the track and watching the race and was in good spirits but obviously bummed out over not getting to race. I really feel sorry for him, having to rebuild a car is not a fun thing in the middle of the racing season. We had to do that about 3 years ago.

Brian. Sorry to hear about your well sorted car being wadded up. I had a similar experience at Mid Ohio last fall (to include the out of class dummie causing it) and had had to build a new car. I my case, it wasn't mid season however. Crummy.

Post's Honda and ground modified SM. Cage and the rest of the safety equipment did their job. A good Mark McMahon cage.

 -

I will give Post a 8.7; he stuck the landing with four tires on the ground, but his mid-air form was not perfect (fenders are bruised) although he gets high marks for including a rare mid-air double roll in the routine.

It was good to see you walking around that evening.

Hey guys,

I am alright. My back is still a little tight, but so far I am making do with only some Motrin. I am trying to avoid the “heavy stuff” if I can. I'll try to give the play by play for anyone who is interested...

First, a little background rant to set up the story. If the race would have been run as advertised, as an SM only run group, I would have been outside pole next to Bennett. Late in the day on Friday, the Stewards put a handful of SSB cars into our group for qualifying. This moved me back to the 3rd spot just behind Bennett. This wasn’t too big of a deal as Chad Gilsinger was the SSB car between us and he has always been great about letting us race.

When I showed up on grid for the race the next day, they gridded me up in the fifth spot and there were now T3 cars in our group. So I went from being on the front row to being in the third row. [Mad] Most of the T3 cars were fast and they immediately checked out. Unfortunately, one Honda S2000 wasn’t anywhere close to the T3 Pace.

This Honda was racing/blocking me, Slattery, and Kucera for the entire race. Shawn and Bob and I swapped places a couple times during the race, but none of us could get around the damned Honda. We could exit every corner along side of him, but didn’t have a chance on the straights. Anyways, I had just passed Shawn and was back into 2nd place with a lap or two to go. Bennett was way too far ahead thanks to this Honda holding us up and I had resigned to cruise/maintain mode for the last couple of laps. I wasn’t putting any pressure on the Honda when he looped it in T4 (banked left hander) directly in front of me. His car was blocking the bottom 2/3rds of the track and I went to the top of the track to try and avoid him. Unfortunately, he was rolling to the top of the track and my left front wheel hit just in front of his left rear wheel. Just like an open wheeled car, my car climbed his wheel and it launched me into the air.

According to the corner workers, my car went up and landed on its nose (left front corner actually), then hit the hardtop directly over my head, then fell sideways into 3-4 more barrel style rolls. After rattling around the cockpit a number of times, I found myself significantly shaken, but the car was on its wheels and I didn’t feel anything majorly wrong with me. There was a Lake Erie Communications corner worker in my window immediately. I knew who I was, where I was from, etc. It was a little hard to stand up, but I got out of the car under my own power. I took a ride in the ambulance back to the tower and almost had them talked into letting my dad take me to the hospital, but I was having a little trouble paying attention to the safety steward so he made me go in the ambulance. Even though things turned out to be alright, making me take the ambulance was the correct call.

The ambulance team and the emergency room crew at the hospital were awesome. They quickly x-rayed my back, ultrasounded my organs, and then sent me in for a cat scan. Nothing inside was broken and all my organs were working properly. There was no sign of any head trauma and I was pretty coherent throughout all but the initial part of the ordeal. They gave me some anti-inflammatory drugs and a couple of prescriptions and let me go.

The car is write off, but I think I was pretty lucky to be able to walk away from this one. My helmet was cracked (kind of like an eggshell, not split in half like some were reporting) as it hit the hardtop and the rollcage a number of times, but the helmet did its job. I never even got a head ache the entire weekend. The window net and right side net that NASA made me put in last year did their jobs as well as my seat, HANS, and the FIA padding. I would like to note that the rollcage performed exceptionally. Mark McMahan (www.rollcageguy.com) does incredible work. After the car fell on its nose, the next hit was right over my head. The hard top was folded down around the rollcage tubes, but the main hoop and the rear brace maintained their integrity. Thanks Mark - I will be calling you about another cage soon!

I appreciate everyone’s concern and all the help I had loading up the wreckage. April and my Dad, Watts and Bennett – you guys are the best. [thumbsup] I am going to take the rest of the season off, but I will be back in spec miata next year. The question is what car will I be in… [Wink]

Brian, very sorry for another bad weekend at Nelson. Glad to hear you will be fine and it sounds like it didn't break your spirit as you are already thinking of next year.
Can we assume you didn't get any kind of apology from the SSB car?

Thought so. He's got a pretty bad rep for getting mixed up in other classes' races. My buddy who runs E Prod was running a race which had that car in it and the guy held him up for the whole race, then after the race had the nerve to tell him how much fun it was to "race" with him. My friend proceeded to tell him off.

It was only a matter of time before something like this accident (ie: Post's) was going to happen. If you see this Bozo out there, take care when you're around him.

Brian,

Glad to see that the safety equipment functioned properly. Also glad that the Safety Steward prevailed in sending you in the "bus"; you never know what can happen shortly after an incident.

If there is anything the SM community can do to help get you back in the game, just ask. We're all here for you. However, don't let Deerwester tell you he can straighten your fenders, even though he has a lot of experience.

If I can find someone to put the video up you can see the start of it.I was locked up and was able to get under the S2000 as Brian and Shawn had to take the outside when the car shot up the track and hit Brian in the left front fender and drivers door. This caused Brian's car to get air and started to barrel roll.

The car made one complete roll in the air without even touching the ground, once it hit I was able to count 5 rolls out of my passenger window(I was in 1st gear at this time).

I will say this,it was a great race for 2,3,and 4th place up until this happened.Like Brian said we were bumper to bumper changing position's the hole race until a blocking S2000 caused this to happen.I think it was totally uncalled for, there was nobody in sight from any class behind us.He should have let us go and stayed behind us and watched the battle.

Shawn I will give you thumb's up,you are one of the hardest guy's I've ever had (tried) to pass other then a S2000. [thumbsup] You can sure dirt track that car! [Big Grin]

Brian SORRY about the car but I'm sure glad your ok!

PS Brian how much do you want to rent the motor for the rest of the season if it's still ok? [Big Grin]
