I have decided to follow through with my New Year's resolution to go racing" this year. Starting from scratch (almost) I just purchased a 99 SM with fresh Reynolds engine and drivetrain, Hans device (get getting older and wiser). I am starting at the very bottom rung of the ladder (no license) but will get a set up weekend at TWS to learn the car. Looking at the SCCA schools but the schedule looks rather sparse.

What is the best alternative if I wanted to accelerate the process? I am aware of the typical Skip Barber etc... what is the best choice to get something as close to SM?

Probably your best bet in the SW Div is to attend a DE and learn the car. Most of the DE groups have SM drivers as instructors that can help you learn the cars and tracks.

There is a test weekend at TWS this weekend, FYI.

Welcome, you've made a great choice. One of the best environments to learn your car is in DE's. You're very luck in that LSR PCA is near you. Even though it is the Porsche club, there are many SM racers who are instructors. Just make sure you have a passanger seat. Also Auto-X is a good environment to learn car control.

Hope this helps a C U @ the track

Thanks guys look foward to meeting you.

I am quite excited, after nibbling around the edges with a dozen or so DEs when Jack Turner was running the TWS events, driving my street cars and little FC (and a couple SM rentals) over the last 6-7 years, I have decided to prioritize playing with cars over work. I can't think of a better format than SM. I won't make it this weekend DE but the 19-20th is booked with Driver's Edge. Thereafter I need to find a school... The best part is that my wife is extremely supportive and wants me to go and play so I can stay sane [Smile]

How close to Hallett Oklahoma are you? They run an SCCA-approved driver's school there that would help you move towards a competition license.

There is a double school and race in Memphis March 15 and 16. You could do the double and be racing on your novice permit right away.

The School is at Memphis Motorsports Park.

It sounds like we will have a good turnout.

I talked to Chris at Saferacer they are going to bring a new driver/car for the school and stay for the race.

Several of us are going to have new cars that we want to shake down so it should be a good week end to learn allot.

It is a two day - double school - you will be done with the schools - two races and you can get your Regional License. You can get one race out of the on Sunday after the school.

If you have trouble finding them let me know I can get you a number.

Z-Man, I might take you up on that - I see the school listed but not on the SCCA calendar - want to make sure that I sign up before it fills up.
