Fundraiser for Mark Pombo
Our fellow Spec Miata Competitor, Mark Pombo, has become one of the final 30 competitors in the Volkswagon TDI Cup. The VW TDI Cup is a televised competition offering the winner a full ride in a pro series.
To raise the money to cover the almost $50,000 dollars in fees, Mark plans to take out a $20,000 dollar student loan, drain his personal (and parents) assets and sell his Spec Miata. I for one would hate to see Mark have to sell his car and get out of Spec Miata racing, so now is our opportunity as a community, to help one of our own and prove that we have the best talent in racing. I personally believe Mark has the talent to win the series, therefore I am starting the fund with $1,000 dollars and I have commitments from many other Miata drivers ranging from $50 to $1,000. Any amount that can be contributed will help get our group recognized and keep Mark in the competition without giving up his Miata roots.

Chip...First I'd like to say that it was great being around you and your guys at the Road Atlanta National, but I especially want to thank you for all you are doing to help defray the enormous costs being incurred by Mark and his family during this VW PDI Cup quest...Even Drago and the Memphis crowd has joined the efforts, and I'm sure all of the Pombo family is very appreciative...But, lets not stop..We still need to raise a lot more money for the cause...And Please, don't be ashamed if your donation is less than $20 bucks...It all builds in the end...Thanks again to all the Spec Miata guys, and hopefully eveyone here in the Southeast in NASA and SCCA will give...Bill Vanderford

Cates Engineering is pleased to announce that we we have signed on as a sponsor for the first 2 races for Mark Pombo for the VW TDI Cup.
We are very excited about this great opportunity and we wish Mark all the best in his future racing career. We all know Mark is a fantastic driver and we expect him to do well and showcase the driving talent in Spec Miata.
The Pombo family are all wonderful people and we look forward to seeing Mark carry on the winning tradition his brother Mat and father Pepe started.
Looks like they all were pushing harder on the last lap and a tight finish. Five out of top six ran their fastest laps on the final lap. Looks like the first race and they are all learning the cars and my guess is they will get faster as the year goes on. Looking at the lap times alone, I would also guess Mark got 'em on race craft.

Another spec miata youngster from the Rocky Mountain Region, Jimmy Underhill, also finished on the podium in third. Seems like our spec miata series is a great training ground for up and coming racers!

Yes, Cates Engineering ... Brian Cates, a fellow specmiata racer helped me out with sponsorship, I appreciate his help what a great family. Hopefully Devon, his son, can do it next year.
The race was very very very eventful. It was a survival contest, and the podium were 3 specmiata drivers with no damage. There was a ton of very aggressive driving, patience paid off. I was in 2nd through 4th the entire race watching the leaders beat and bang. Very little room was left for cars in two wide situations. I figured a top 5 was better than crashing out, then the leaders took eachother out with 2 laps to go and handed over the win.
