So is the 1.8 NA going to get the 4.3 rear end next year?

If it does, I sort of hope it is not "optional" but required. Thus not making another "track dependant" quality.

Which will add cost for the early 1.8 guys, which will probably not go over well with the typical weekend warriors.

As a typical weekend warrior I'd love it. I could compare data to the 90% in my region who drive a 1.6 easier and I can think of a couple corners where I'd really like the gearing change. I'm not thrilled with the price of the change itself though.

If I'm a 1.8 NA owner, I would have both rear ends available at the track if the 4.30 is not mandatory.

2010 car of the year is the 1.8 NA. [Wink]

Slight thread hijack but on subject, will the 4.3 ring and pinion from the 90-93 fit the 94-97 torsen carrier?

okay one more stupid question: to go 4.3 i have to use a 99 up dif. but they have the axles that go right into the housing instead of my 94 which has the stubs and axles. if i want to switch difs back and forth will the stubs and axles from the 94 fit in the 99 dif or will i have to have two sets of axles one for the 99 dif and one for the 94?

I am currently building a 1994 car for SM, but I also have a 1999 car as a daily driver. Would it be legal for me to put the entire 1999 diff with 4.3 final drive on my 1994, or am I stuck taking a 1994 LSD and installing the different gears?

The proposal that is in front of the BoD would make the 4.3 an option for National races until 6-1-10. After that date the 4.3 would be required. For Regionals, that date would be extended until 1-1-11

You can NOT use the 1.6 4.3 diff for a 1.8 car. The ring and pinion are different sizes.

All manual 1.8 drive shafts are interchangable.
All 1.8 half shafts are interchangable with the exception of the MazdaSpeed units.

Dave

Any words of wisdom for those of us putting a torson into a 4.3 open diff? I know enough to know that I don't know much. I understand there are some common assembly errors that cause them to die a quick and painful death though.

My advise would be to have a pro do it. I built three diffs and followed the manual to the letter. All three chewed themselves to pieces. [twocents]

I think were going to see alot more 1.8 cars up front with this change. Interesting to see if any of the National 99 owners make a switch??

The '99 already has the 4.3 so there won't be much to switch. [Smile]

I'm sure some tracks will like one over the other. At my home track I'm happy to go with the smaller gearing. Problem is, I'll be grabbing 5th in a couple places I normally wouldn't so chances are I'm going to forget what gear I'm in once or twice during the heat of battle and blow the downshift. [yep]

I'm pretty sure the rule will be written in such a way that would prevent anyone that already has a 4.30 to go with a 4.10...

I know one guy in Memphis building one as we speak [Wink] I think the car will be really good everywhere, my only concern is Road America.. with any luck I will have both and try back to back.

I guess if and when I get to 230lbs [Smile] It looks like I could have been a little faster in one [duck]

DISCLAIMER:
I personally would not chose a 1.6 car as it is IMO the most expensive car to build in top flight prep. It is also difficult and expensive to maintain a 1.6 in top flight form. I know many complain about newer cars being expensive. But 94 up guys arent buying $1500+ comp diffs yearly, Tuned AFM's, Intakes, estrictor plates minimize the gain of best headers& intakes available, which are a must on a good 1.6.
