This old 200 lb. bod ain't getting any slimmer over the winter.

With a 3 gal cool suit, 5 gal fire system, cross bars on the pass door (w/electric motor), 1 gallon of gas and me, I'm at about 2310 in my '91.

What's the easiest place to start looking for 15 pounds?

The Mazdaspeed crapped out mid-season. Replaced with a torsen. Also added a cool suit. That's probably 25 lbs. over a typical '91.

What are tie downs?

Not to answer for Jason but i think he is talking about the factory tow hooks front and back. I've seen a few cars with the required 2 and the other 2 pear-shaped loops.

I'm about to do the same with my car. ECU cover, hood latch (to be replaced with pins), come to mind. Center console helped me take a few pounds out as well.

Someone please help me out. Can we ditch the window in the passenger side door even if our roll cage bars don't go in there? The reason I ask is I saw a crash video where that window was still in the door and shattered all over the bloody place. i'll keep all the internal components, I would just prefer to avoid a glass shower.

No "This gutting of the door shall only be made if roll cage incorporates NASCAR-style side protection extending into the door."

I'd like to see that video. If you keep the factory panels in like you are supposed to, it keeps it pretty contained.

But no...you can't.

How about the blower motor being removed from the housing. Not sure that is legal.

Ohh well. Andy, I think it was from the limerock incident between the spec miata and the integra. Reading the postings on the IT forums someone said there was glass all over the place.

As an aside, has anyone ever altered a Hard Dog spec miata cage to give it better NASCAR bars? I'd love to improve my cage, but don't know if the modification would be worth it in terms of $$ and safety.

Hey Jason, it is not legal to remove the oem tie downs except for installation of the proper sized tow hooks

Removing you current rt side door bars and installing NASCAR bars is typicly a 20 pound wieght savings.

I have modified just about every type of cage for Nascar bars. It can be done.

Removing the factory door bars is not legal and specifically spelled out in the GCR. Also, the GCR specifically states that the factory tow hooks can be removed, modified or replaced. Nor does it say that you can remove the undercoating, though most folks do.

Since I figure Dave has a pretty good grasp on the rules [Big Grin] , I'll venture a guess that he was talking about removing the existing cage "cross bars" the original poster referred to. [yep]

Ridiculous to keep the glass in. Look at the pic of the yellow car someone posted. I can't figure out why you can't take it out. That should be changed. One piece of saftey glass in the eye will put you in the hospital..If not for the weight, just for safety.. Can it be changed??

Parking brake and cables combined is another couple pounds. Heater core bypass (not my favorite but result of an incident) probably drops capacity 1/3- 1/2 gallon maybe? That would be 2-4 pounds. Steel to Aluminum radiator. Power steering pump bracket on the drivers side of the engine.

I'm aware. But if you replace the oem tiedowns with spectra runners on all four corners it ends up being a significant weight savings.

Dave, is there a Fastrack rule that over rides
SMCS 9.1.8.C.4.i.?

***Undercoating.***

Which SCCA rule allows removing the undercoating?

Really?

Towing eyes per GCR Section 9.3.46 are required. Stock towing eyes may be modified, replaced, or removed but may serve no other purpose.

I always read that to mean that as long as you satisfy 9.3.46 with one tow loop at the front and one tow loop at the rear, you may remove the other "stock" towing eye at the front and the rear.

Perhaps "paperweight" is one of the disallowed other purposes. [Cool]

not trying to product place, just a question. what's the lightest exhaust out there? I run SSM so I'm obviously going to stick with what I have, but for other people looking for the last couple of pounds it might be an option.

I made my own out of used motorcycle parts, not sure of the weight but about a 1/3 of the standard Auto Glassback system I had before. And it is significantly quieter as a bonus. I still suck at welding but getting better. Power seems to be about the same. I think Ari still makes a great and light system.

I need to lose 65 LBS! I've done just about everything except dive under the dash. Is it legal to remove; heater core, air conditioning condenser and associated mechanisms, I will remove all air bag items if still in there. What else is in there? If Dave's average build is 2040lbs dry w/out driver and lighter tubing cage then large people with heavier cage will never make it. Any suggestions?

Wes, heater core no. A/C, you can remove all of it. Condencer, hoses, evaporater, pump. Mazda sells a tube that goes in place of the evap.

I stand corrected on the tow hook wording. Per the current GCR it does say tow hooks may be removed.

Going from 2 straight door bars with complete doors, to Nascar bars and gutting the door will save about 20 pounds per door. And yes, the factory impact beam must remain.

My cages are made with 1.625" tubing, this adds about 6 pounds to the car. My rear hoop braces extend into the trunk and end near the battery. My cages are not designed to be light wieght. They are designed for safety.

My point is that if I can build a car with a heavier than typical cage, 15 pound wheels and get to 2040, why can't these people with light wieght bolt in cages?

And by the whay, I only remove the excess seam sealer/undercoating from the drivers footwell area.

Thanks Soupy.

2006 New England Road Racing Championship (NERRC) in the SSM class, #11 blue.

It seems to me there are a lot of over 200lbs, knowledgable, '90 - '92 owners out there that have done the prep work and still will never get close to the new weight. Is there that much as manufactured variation in the cars original weights??

If so is there an item we could let them remove as long as no lead was added to the car?
