I am looking to pull together a group buy for the AMB 260 transponder, either the wired or rechargeable.
Let me know if you are interested in getting in or if you have any experience with purchasing this item.

Please excuse the brief "hijack" here, but since we are speaking of AMB transponders, does anyone know, typically, how long they last. And should one carry a spare.

I'm interested in a wired unit. When you find out more on cost, I can determine whether it's doable for me. Just put in a rebuilt trans and new clutch, so I'm rather $$ depleted right now... what else is new?

Bill-
Unless you chew up the wires somehow or crush it in a wreck I haven't heard of them dying. If for some reason yours dies at the track, they rent them there too. Just don't forget to remove it after your race weekend or you just bought it. I wouldn't worry about carrying a spare personally.

I remember when you could get them for $125.00 and I thought that was expensive. This has to be the only piece of technology in the history of the world to get more expensive over time.

Although I agree that the current price is ridiculous, keep in mind that you are also getting a very nice system for tracking all of your events with detailed lap data (MyLaps).

I don't know of anyone who carries a spare. But I also have had one die on me. It was during a school, so no harm done. It was an older wired version (when they were as wide as the rechargable one). I sent it in, and since it was out of warranty, AMB said they wouldn't even attempt a repair on an older model. Since then, no issues.

Agree that they are pricy, but part of the problem is the USD has fallen so much that European products look much more expensive if buying in USD. It would be interesting to see the price history in Euros or UK Pounds. Unfortunately Iím not sure how to see that kind of price history. Anyone else have it?

Also, is AMB really allowing you to do a group buy?

We used to do group buys with AMB RC transponders with our club buying 20 or so. IIRC we sold them for $60 instead of $80, but that was when it was 80 cents to the Euro.

Here is the latest:
I inquired with 7 vendors and have heard from 5 with the best price of $350 plus shipping. One vendor is working on a better price and will get back to me in the next few days.
So far I have 15 positive responses and another 10 that are price dependant.
I hope to be able to arrange the buy so that each person will order directly from the vendor and have the unit shipped straight to them. It is expected that the vendor will require all the units be ordered within a specified time to get the discounted price.
If you expressed an interest based on price, please consider the $350 number and let me know if you are still interested and how many units you want.

It appears that there is plenty of interest in this group buy so I have secured the following deal:
1 wired AMB 260 Transponder - shipped to the lower 48 - $349.50 or less.

Here is how it works:
-Provide me, via email address below, with your name, phone number, email address, and number of units by Dec. 27.
-The master list will be provided to the vendor.
-You will be contacted by the vendor on Dec. 28 or 29 with instructions on how to make a credit card payment.
-Shipment will occur by the close of business Dec. 30.

If the total number of units ordered is greater than 20 then the vendor may be able to lower the price even more. Regardless, your exact price will be confirmed at the time you submit your payment information.
If you are still interested, send me your name, phone number, email, and the number of units you want so that you can get in this group buy.
I have been told by AMB that they will have a 5% increase the first of the year so this order will be completed before then.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Right now the list is at 14 units and there are 10+ posters from above that I have not heard from.
If you are still interested in a unit at $349.50 shipped, please let me know so that we can use larger numbers to lower the price for everyone.

We are at 20 units right now and vendor has informed me that if we hit 25, the price shipped will drop to $342 wired , and $377 rechargeable.
Let me know if you are in...cutoff date is 12-27.

Final call.
The numbers are up to 31 and there are still a few from this forum I have not heard from.
Wired units are $342 shipped and rechargeable are $377 shipped. It is possible that the price will come down a bit more if everyone that says they wanted in will contact me with their order.
Email me with name, email address, phone number and unit type and number by 12-27 to be included.
