Do SCCA National rules require 99 Spec Miata's to run side Mirrors on the car?

Thanks!

I see no provision for ANY year SM to remove side view mirrors.

The rule is very clear.

Any interior or exterior mirrors may be used.

It's not in effect yet but it will be for next year.

Item 1. Effective 10/1/09: Add a new subsection k to section 9.1.8.C.7. as follows:

k. Exterior mirror assemblies must be factory OEM units. Removal of these mirror assemblies is not allowed. Additional interior
mirrors may be installed provided they are safely and securely mounted.

Item 2. Effective 10/1/09: Change section

9.1.8.C.8.d as follows:
d. Any interior mirrors may be used.

So you can run without side mirrors if you wanted then...for now.

Ryan, I would put some type of side mirror on for now. But they don't have to be stock until next year if the BOD approves that rule, which I don't think has happened yet.

Sorry to ask a dumb question, but why would you remove these mirrors?

My driver side has been removed and replaced with a better mirror on the A-pillar.

I think the proposed rule requiring the stock mirrors (assuming a stock mounting location) is flawed. I cannot see out of the stock located mirror due to my seat halo.

Tyler, your wording differs from the June Fastrack News release (FWIW, I like your version):
SPEC MIATA
Effective 10/1/09: Clarify section as follows:
OEM exterior mirrors shall be retained. Mirror mounting position may be changed, but must remain within 6” of the original location on the exterior of the door. The OEM interior mirrors may be removed, relocated or replaced by a mirror of any design. Additional mirrors may be added, both interior and exterior.
MOTION: To approve the Spec Miata item: (Meridith/Wannarka) PASSED unanimous

Reasons competitors remove them:
1. They get knocked off.
2. They’re in the wrong/bad location.
3. I’ve replaced them with better alternatives.
4. I don’t use them.
5. The rule allows them to be removed.

I believe it was never the intent of the current rule to allow removal, however some interpret it that way.

I just remembered it from another thread so I copied and pasted it. I think it was an April Fastrack that Wheel had posted it in.

Didn't some years' base models come without a passenger side mirror?

So...where is the best source for a driver side mirror. Looks like they run about $130 from the part houses. Can't find one on the MazdaSpeed site.

a. aerodynamic advantage
b. replacement cost
c. because the OEM mirrors suck.

Is central division going to have a Ray Kollock exception? I can't afford to run with OEM mirrors AND ray at the same time.
