I have MXL Pista. Considering adding video, so the Smarty Cam looks like the best option? Any user opinions? Also will the GPS within SC give me lap times without a beacon?

We used a Smartycam for an enduro two weeks ago and it was a nice little setup. The camera is small and easy to mount. The video looked pretty good. The sound level was about right (you could hear the exhaust and the driver cursing both at pleasant levels.) You could easily toggle between a couple different data overlay options on the fly which was slick.
Roger Caddell from Victory Lane Data was our team's data guru and has been experimenting with it. Very nice guy and very knowledgeable about AIM stuff. I'm sure he wouldn't mind answering questions.

Yes, the SmartyCam GPS will allow you to dump the beacon. The new versions of the camera have an external antenna which looks like all the other GPS antennas so you can mount it anywhere it can get a full view of the sky.
Video in my experience has been just a bit better than the ChaseCam stuff I also have in the car.
Straight forward to use, easy to setup the communication with the dash in the software. Nice to be able to aim the camera and know where it's pointing thanks to the screen.

US version is the 3rd version with these improvements: • External GPS antenna option. • Improved video (AIM heard complaints and the chipset supposedly improved). • True Data-logging abilities - Data / video are recorded separately and importable into AIM's Race Studio software.

I went with SC because the car came w/ AIM MXL Pista. Here's the "rough" video. http://vimeo.com/11929360 Still needs some tweaking. (FYI, I'm not shifting from 3rd to 5th & not doing 9min laps). SC creates an .avi format with H.264 codec , which doesn't work Windows Movie Maker and about everything else I have . (AIM suggests "AVS Video Editor 4" which worked, but it's bare bones and will cost $30-$60 to get a registered version). Resolution on Vimeo isn't that far from the original, guess I'm spoiled with my Flip HD. Any video advice would be welcomed. (Advice about my driving "ability", well that would be under the topic " Hopeless?" )

We also purchased the MXL Pista with video. We are wondering if we can install the AIM logger and dash into a 2000 Miata ECU thru the CAN or GBD2 port or do all the sensors have to be hooked up separately...?
