I'm considering starting from scratch, rather than convert my SM...a few questions:
1. Is it advisable to dip the donor chassis rather than blast as a first step?
2. I've noticed many cage designs...is there some standard layout/plan that will provide safety and rigidity that I could find somewhere online? Our cage builders here in Central Florida don't seem to have an opinion..they're expertise is in SM mostly and wish me to provide the design.
3. Other than Mazdaspeed, where can I purchase the body panels that most seem to be using?
Thanks to all for this forum.

John,

What are you converting your SM too? You can buy body panels from, East Street (an advertiser), Panic Motorsports, Planet Miata, search craiglist for a cheap donor as well. I have several fellow SMrs who have scored deals under $1,000.

John,

Where in central Florida do you live?

Chris...I'm keeping "Old Shep" in order to continue to chase you in SM but have decided to build an FP car as well.
George...I live in Ormond Beach

John,

Most people will advise to start from scratch if your plan on running up front. I apologize but I don't have an opinion of which method would be better, blasting or dipping.
You can certainly convert an existing SM and be competitive but the general rule of thumb is purpose built.

There are a number of Production Miata parts for sale at the production site - http://prodracing.com/prodcar/index.php

As far as the cage, I designed my own. I started with the GCR, then at the 2007 RunOffs, I took pictures of all the Production Miatas and built mine based on my own thoughts around safety and functionality. Go to this link on this site for more info and a link to a bunch of pictures - http://forum.specmiata.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?/topic/50/4.html

Hope this helps to get you started. A production Miata is a blast to drive, and if done correctly, very reliable. I have only had one DNF in 3 years of racing. That is very respectable with any racecar.

Not sure if it is still the case but John had his FP Miata for sale a while back. I don't think it has ever been on the track. Incredibly nice build. John is a fantastic fabricator. If I were going to run FP I'd buy his car and never look back.

John,
You might check with Mike at ISC Racing, he built cages in his open cockpit style Miata Track Car. It looks like something you might be interested in. He's in Winter Haven
