Test day is over...

fast boys include "Armed and Dangerous" Cliffie Brown, Andrew von Carbonuckle, Jamie "High Chair" Tucker, Craig "wish I was back in a Porsche" Foster, and a few others. A couple were able to run times early in the morning in the high 1.43's

Times degraded quickly as the day wore on, and if you were runnig high 44's at the end of the day you were fast.

After a car blew an engine and dropped oil in front of me, I buried my new car in the T5 kitty litter, chipping the paint on entire left side from the rocks, and pulling both right side tires off the rims. Jamie did an amazing job of avoinding hitting me as he spun behind me.

Dargo's was sandbagging and his new car got faster as the day wore on and he will be a factor. Apparently he took the 35mmm RP plate out for the last session!!!!

Lamb, Pombo and others tested their MX5's - these wicked cars haul the mail out of the turns, but the gear ratios are strange for RA.

Tomorrow's qualifying sessions and ProIT races should be a good indication as to who will be fast on Sunday. SEDiv has some fast racers for sure.

And Lance, my understanding is that all the SM's are going to have their ECU's pulled and their gas tested.

[group hug] Sounds like test day went well with no major OOPS! Danny , hope the new ride is ok, and the OPM boys can get er fixed.
Danny, show or post the pictures of Mr. Von Charb, and he will be behind you all day. He won't be able to take the heat!
Best wishes for all OPM boys this weekend!!! [thumbsup]

not sure on times... Charburnuckle is on fire, he won Pro it but was light. So I think it was Mark Pombo, Danny Steyn,Jamie Tucker, Craig Foster, then me after I had a loft moment from p2 at turn 1 [Frown] Went to DFl, fun coming through, but not when you put yourself there...

National qual..
Charboneau 42.9
brown 43.7, both pombos 43.7/8 me 43.9, then I think Jamie Tucker, Steyn,Foster and Sandlin all in low 44's very tight.. looks like rain.

Had the best seat in the house today for one of the best SM races at RA in a long time. Ran in 3rd behind Von C and Pombo. I didnt really have enough to challenge, but was hoping for an error, glitch or something.

What a race, one of the most entertaining ever to watch. Mark and Andrew traded places several times, and on one occastion they traded place twice between T1 and T3!!!!!

Traffic and the two of them getting racy with each other allowed me to hang on. After 45 minutes the three of us crossed the line within 17/100ths of a second. Epic.

Tomorrow will be blast!

Congrats to Danny for the win and for everyone else for level-headed driving!! I can't wait to hear the Lap 1 stories because Danny started +/-P5 and came around in 1st with a pretty good lead.

There were some good battles behind Danny and really good car control through 1 and up the hill. Lots of guys dancing at the edge of traction.

Great to see a hard-fought national race end with all cars in one piece!

Foster needs a foot-cam from what I hear.

Pat - it was wet for sure, dried out a bit midway, and then came down again.

In the dry qualifying, Charboneau at 1.42.9 was the class of the field, clear by 7/10ths of Cliffie Brown in P2, and the next 9 qualified within a second.

I started the rain race in P7, stayed on it through T1, got inside the slippy slidy mele in Turn 1, made it up to 2nd by T3 behind Cliffie Brown, and passed Cliffie going into T6. Never had a challenge after that.

Built up a lead up to around 10 seconds, saw it drop to 5 as the track dried, and traffic played its part, and then opened it up to 13 seconds as the rain came down again.

Behind me there was a really exciting race for 2nd with Voytek, Brown, Bolanos, and Mark Pombo battling it out. Bolanos ran FRL at 1.55.9

At tech it was Impound ALL, weights and tires were checked as well as ballast bolts (a new one) so make sure you have the right bolts or next time DQ!!!!

By the time the 2nd ProIT rolled around at 5.00 pm, most had left as the real monsoon started.

Massive rivers were running across the track, and in the middle of the race it got really nasty with spins on the back straight, crashes in the esses taking out Safriet and Brock, T7 takin out College, so Voytek decided to save his car and put it on the trailer. Craig Foster and I stayed out, and made the best of it. Wettest race I have ever driven - great learning experience!!!

Great drive Danny! My car got better as the dry line formed up mid race and I was able to make my way towards the front. Awesome battles with the Pombos (nice to finally meet you guys) as well as Voytek and the Autotechnik boys.

Also wanted to thank Jeff and Corey with Autotechnik for their help with the car, it's nice to have someone that knows the 1.8s (and their handling issues) so well nearby to bounce questions off of.

What a mess. Must say it took about 3 sessions to get used to Danny's new paint job but from a flagging perspective the orange highlights are complete win... especially in the conditions on Sunday. Makes picking out the car very easy.

While it turned into a brutal day it was nice to be at the track again with friends. Throughout Sunday the track would change 3 or 4 times during some of the races. It would go from completely soaked with no standing water, then get a deluge for about 5 minutes.. then backed off leading to the standing water being cleared again. Wash, rinse, repeat... had to be challenging for the drivers.

Saturday's Pro-IT was a show, 45 minutes of nose to tail... impressive driving by Von C, Pombo and Steyn.

Heard in the turn 6 gravel trap:

"I didn't bury it that deep <driver looks the car over a bit closer>... maybe I did."

***Anybody have a breakdown of what flavor car each driver raced?***

Interesting question. Check the April Fastrack according to those that make the decisions it would be all to confusing amongst drivers and officials to identify SM cars by their spec line.

& please don't ask how many cars from each spec line race because those that make the decisions don't care or should I just say those that make the decisions don't know.

Also please ask those that make the decisions how when their watching a SM race how they can tell the difference between the three different spec line cars between the 1990/1997 if they don't know ahead of time.

2. #578 (David Dewhurst) Spec Miata Class Identification Creating multiple class designations, within the same class, would cause confusion amongst drivers and officials.

Gut feeling - Anyone who cares already knows what year car a driver is in, Everyone else could care less.

Danny, first off another fine drive at Atlanta. [yep]

Because of all the unknowns in the SM world relative to how many cars race from each specification line and the total number of different SM that race I sent in a request. The request would have been to change (include info on event sheets) the SM car identification from the existing SM to SM 90/93, SM to SM 94/97 and son on. Or SM to SM 1, SM 2 and so on. With a change of this nature all the information that people look for in the results sheets would be available. I presumed the info could be tracked similar to the method of participation numbers.

1 39 SM 99/00 Danny Steyn

2 47 SM 94/95 Voytek Burdzy

3 78 SM 94/95 Alex Bolanos

Sure but wouldn't that be pointless if we really had parity between the 3 generations? [Wink]

Or if the guys watching could rattle off all the cars by memory with only one question mark? [Wink]

I so deserved that! Lesson 148.2: Shoes with delaminated soles stick under clutches at the worst possible times... like with 50 Miata's overtaking me at a national race start! Thanks for the great driving guys and avoiding the #4 in center track T1. Shoes have been retired.

Great drive Danny. I better get on the ice racing practice program. Nice weekend and really enjoyed parking next to the Memphis gang for a change.

Can anyone tell us where these guys finished before being moved to the back for running R888's?

Just wondering how they compared to the guys running the RA1's?

I'm pretty sure Brown was on RA-1s... I think he finished 6th or 7th. From personal experience: Full tread RA-1s are better in full wet conditions, Full tread R888s are better in intermediate conditions (they squirm less).

Tom Brown( not Bo Duke Brown) was R888 and Pat stayed in the back by design

I know Tom Brown was 10th on the track. Bruce Anderson was 12th (I think) and Sandlin was about 15th

Does anybody have video of the start. I think Danny started 5th and Voytek was about 10th. By turn 5 they where 1-2. All I could see was spray, the video should be spectacular

From what I could see from the driver's seat in the rainy NASA enduro the week before, I'm willing to bet that any in-car video except Danny's looks exactly like the view you had Dave.

PS were you just teasing us - I didn't see that bottle of merlot all weekend! [Big Grin]
