Don't know much about them either but I use Chris Kellet from Sync Speed. He is a fellow SMer and a great guy to work with.

Chris,
Depends on exactly what you're looking for and what type of radio you're using but Frys has the full face motorcycle headsets for $40.

Don't mess around, get a real radio system with noise canceling mic's. Ground shipping from Socal makes it to the PNW in 3 days. Call Sampson Racing and have Shawn hook you up. The customer service alone from Shawn is well worth it.

Chris,

I have the full blown top of the line radio kit from Sampson and I have used the full-face motorcycle radio kit from Midland Radio and honestly... I have a hard time telling them apart!

http://www.midlandradio.com/Two-Way-Radio-Accessories.NX9/AVP-H2

The helmet kit is made by Otto Engineering, a respected firm in professional/military communications and is nicely done for $50 bucks!
http://www.ottoexcellence.com/comm/helmetkits.html

I would SERIOUSLY recommend trying the Midland setup first if only because it's easy to find use for a couple of GMRS radios if you don't like them in the car.

Kent,
Here in the NW we have concept called "hills" that you TX flatlanders might not be familair with. [Big Grin] [duck]

When I've used GMRS radios skiing they prove worthless. I've used the Kenwood 5W systems in the mountains and at work with good success. Pacific Raceways here has a lot of elevation change so I'd be skeptical not having tried them. 2/3 of the course is down hill out of sight from the start/finish/pit area. Sounds like Chris already has the radios...he didn't mention what type though. [Smash]

Hey Kent- We offer that complete system for moto use in the off road division (I agree w/ you that the mic quility is the same, but that where it ends). There are some major issues w/ that system on the road racing side of things. Example, pin connections are easy to brake, must use speakers, radio connections are limited, no way to upgrade the system, no chance of getting parts at the track, no way to interface it w/ a industry standard system. I thought about trying to offer it a few yrs back as a low buck system but it would just add to bigger issues for our customers. So glade we didn't, as we have folks that plugged it together in a hurry and pins have been broken, radios are limited, helmet kit failure issues, harness issues, plugs don't stay together, etc..

IMO, For the most part its a inexpensive moto communication system built out of china (we buy from the same manufacturer) that is great for the guys that ride a moto a few times a yr. but not something I want to put our company's name behind in the auto racing world. Its a use and toss items.

BTW, Kent I wanted to see what "full blown system" you have and all I see is some parts that you have got from us, back in 04 and 05. If you are having any radio issues please feel free to call me and lets walk through your current system. I'm not sure what other stuff you have?

Don't forget about the crew headset. Without a good noise canceling mic on this individual the driver gets to hear all cars within earshot of the crew guy screaming in their ears. Chances are the crew member won't be able to hear the driver reliably either without the headset. Potentially painful for the driver and damn annoying for the crew. Speaking into a handset just doesn't cut it and doesn't look cool either [Smile] .

I do have a whole radio set (two crew head sets) The only think I don't have is the ear pieces and the mic in the helmet... I have the puch to talk button for the driver and an antenna in the car... so I'm 90% there, just need the in the helmet stuff.

Shawn, I bought the whole kit and kaboodle from you in 2004: GTX80's, helmet kit, harness, PTT, etc.

I bought a replacement mic and a new PTT from you... turns out it was the main harness the whole time. Intermittant.... those are always frustrating.

The system is good quality, just doesn't work much better than the Midland GMRS system we cobbled up for a LeMons team. Granted, one helmet kit and one PTT died, but that's the same failure rate I have for my highbuck stuff [Smile]

Hey Kent Thanks for the follow-up. The FRS/GMRS GTX80 radios back then were only a 2watt radio, believe me the quility of the new radios is far superior these days.

The "newer" Midland radios should be 5watt (ch 1-6 only and set at high power). W/o the ability to add a external antenna kit, just keep them up high and you should be good to go!

All the best, Shawn
