All this talk about alleged cheating and SCCA's inability to properly tech is getting pretty stale. It's detracting from the phenomenal effort that these competitors are putting in.

The all the runoffs competitors: good luck and thanks in advance for putting on the show! I can't wait until Friday!

To all the "experts": quit yer bitchin, start volunteering in the tech shed.

I agree. However, I think there are guys that could be close to front runners that are giving just as much (if not more) effort, only to end up finishing mid or back in the pack b/c some other guys choose to exploit the gray areas of the rules. Sorry, I'm done.

IMHO - Exploiting grey areas is racing.
Intentionally violating a black and white rule is cheating.

I am new and naive, what are the differences in barometric and track conditions that have lead to considerably slower times from Monday to today?

They have not qualified today but it should go off around 4:30 (I think central time). Conditions look perfect so we will see what happens. With the cooler temps I doubt anyone will be holding back in this session.

What is the link for live timing that displays lap notes along with times? The links I found only displayed times.

your grid is now set, Son of Sam and the Von are the 2nd row, Drago @ P-5, back in the fight, everyone in the first 7 rows has a chance to podium.
Sorry Shaun, even though you set the 1.6 class track record, podium cutoff is with the Chipster at P-14.

unless S o S puts a .50 cal - 500 grain - beowulf round into the back of the Gorilla at the start (at T-1), the race is for P-2, but man what a race it will be, monster battles all the way back through the field.

Over under on post race DQ's?
The SM rules are black and white on individual engine, drive train and suspension components (each spec'd part);
very dark gray on machine work to these components, medium dark gray on assembly (tolerances) and light gray on prep.
Very light, almost white gray are the rules governing the 'peripherals' to these components meaning 'tech shed legal', open for interpretation.
What shade of very white gray do you think the top racers will be painting themselves?
There are some very intelligent and experienced folks in that top group. Maybe it comes down to 'ego' undoing a few?

I'll give it to him (Gorilla), I think he has the whole SM thing figured out pretty well. BUT don't try to take anything away from him by thinking it is all power and no skill; To put down those times and be consistent, all race long, takes alot of hard work. Every driver in the top 20 has put some seat time in to put them self in contention at this point.

Congrats to the whole field, especially the Top 20, you guys deserve it.

I hope you all have a SAFE, yet great race on Friday and good luck to every one of you.. [Big Grin]

Every driver in the top 20 has put some seat time in to put them self in contention at this point.
/QB]

Cliffy; you are 100% spot on, don't see where anybody said otherwise.
Steve G. is a very talented and experienced racer, dedicated and focused on his goal, which is to win. You may know of him as a winning SM racer of the last few years, i had the pleasure of duking it out with him bout 10 years ago at Daytona, at the Grand Am Cup race, he was in the Canada Hyundai Tiburon, i was in a RX7, had a full stint battle with the guy. He is the real deal, a hard nosed racer.
Only question is; is his driving, in equal '99s, 1.5 sec per lap faster than say, von C ??

Same goes for the rest of em. You know better, the 'purely driver' difference of the top 15 of that incredibly talented field is no more than .3 - .4 sec per lap. That missing second is 'shades of gray'. They are all good, heck you have a guy that beat a Andretti 22 years ago in Indy Lights starting back in row 6 in front of my Ultimate Fighter friend from Pompano Beach. Having gone toe to toe with almost everyone in that top 15 (all except Blake, York, Steyn and Berry), just suggesting a big picture perspective.

Anyway, as you said, this is about them, all 63 of them, their dance at the big show, wishing them all a fun, competitive and safe race.

Very light, almost white gray are the rules governing the 'peripherals' to these components meaning 'tech shed legal', open for interpretation.

What shade of very white gray do you think the top racers will be painting themselves?
There are some very intelligent and experienced folks in that top group. Maybe it comes down to 'ego' undoing a few?

i think its interesting how coello refuses to dyno his car so scca goes eh well here is a stock computer, you need to put that in. Then goes on his merry way with no severe penalty. All week NOT ONE car has been torn down or even so much as to have its valve cover taken off, only thing they have done is check fuel. We spend all this money to come here and yet nothing is done in tech. Pretty sad considering the past four years tech has been awesome.

David delGenio builds and does the setup of the car.. I don't know what he is running for a motor this year, but I would expect it is built to David's specs.

Lap times have been pretty amazing out here. My week has been tough, we came out with some issues that are starting to get resolved. I have to thank Chip for hooking me up with a new Rossini motor and Soren and the Pombos for putting it in for me. The motor pulled strong on the dyno, so yesterday was going to be my first true qualifying session. Unfortunately, on the first lap I lost fifth gear. I have to thank Mark for sacrificing his session to try to push me in neutral on the straights when i got above foruth gear. Mark has been quick but yesterday lost out in qualifying because of my loss of fifth gear, so look for him to move up on Friday. We're putting in a new tranny this morning, so I plan to move up the field with my new Rossini on Friday. Thanks again to the Pombos, Chip, Rossini, Soren and all the other guys out here lending a hand.

See all you naysayers of years past. Its not a '99 track. There are 4 non '99's in the top 30.

Would you expect anything else? Out of 63 cars there are only 6 1.6s and only 1 that is even remotely competitive on any given day. I think a more logical conclusion is that people with 99s have more money to blow and can afford to go to the runoffs.

weather ... weather ... weather
as the top 'dancin for the stars' competitors sit around today looking up at a getting nasty by the hour sky, what do they do?
It will rain tonight for sure but what about tomorrow at 11:30 AM?
This is not a question of slapping on a set of full treads at the last moment ...
If it rains, they don't need to be dressed in any shade of 'gray', virgin white will be just fine ... or do they repaint their 'package' to an almost white shade of gray? PMS color charts are now being reviewed, discussed, fretted over ...
no one wants to be punted off in the second 'race', you know, the one that counts ...
thats all for now,
Brent Musburger

Yea, it must be the money. [Roll Eyes]

If the 1.6 was in any way competitive under the current rules "Bill" would campaign one.
