Mazda doesn't make a hardtop for the Miata anymore, other than the retractable version. How will that affect racing rules in the future? Will the retract-top be allowed? Has this been discussed?
There are only a finite amount of old-style hardtops. Looking down the road, would it be wise to purchase the PRHT version Miata? Eventually the early 90's Miatas will be for "vintage" racing. Will after-market hardtops be used and approved?? Worth discussing. [help]

I don't think the NC will be allowed to compete in SM. It's too different from the NA/NB. There are still plenty of earlier donors to build.

MX-5 Cup cars race without hardtops. When that series dies, the cars will probably end up racing in a Regional or National class without hardtops.

There is an NC detachable hard top available. Not sure why MX5 Cup doesn't use them, but it is an option.

MX5 Cup wants the fans to be able to see the drivers working.

The newer cars have never sold in the volumes the older ones did, so they are already comparatively rare.

Can anyone guess how many Miatas are currently racing? At one point Mazda said they sold 1000 suspension kits, but that was years ago.

So lets say there are 5000 cars racing, minus the ones crashed, that leaves 995,000 donors and probably 50,000 hard tops.

Way more old cars left than there ever will be of the new ones.

You are soooo right.

Numbers vary due to sources

NA 1.6 -- 136788 to 138041
NA 1.8 77200 to 77323
99-00 50751 to 55882
01-04 does not matter

I was always told that Mazda wants to promote the Mx5 as a convertible and that's why the cup cars run topless.

Let's get JD into the conversation...

We should let the current MX5s run in Spec Miata too.

Mazda put a limit on the first year of the PRHD
miata, there was only 3 alotted to dealerships
per quarter.
If you would like a good laugh, go to a Mazda
dealer and look in the glovebox of a retractable
hardtop. There you will find nylon string/rope
(clothesline gauge) and two hooks. If that
top's motor acts goofy while down then that is
what is given to the owner to manual force the
top back up, to get it a dealer. Mazda gives the
3 years or 36,000 miles on that top, then you
and your wallett are on your own.
The NC hardtops come painted from Mazda and have
the defrost harness attatched.

Greg has it right. Mazda wants the convertible aspect advertised.

I liked driving it w/o the top even though we had to wear arm restraints. The only downside was sitting on grid in the rain...

NASA midAtlantic has something sort of like that
called Hyperfest, where a bunch of women (young, old, grandmothers and spinster aunts) let
their cheeks hang out of their shorts, daisy duke
contest.
