Wow. What happened? We have twice the number of GTL cars!

Has national level SM died?

You can't blame the economy when other more expensive classes haven't had the same rate of drop off. SRF has a full field.

Hi Alan,

It is the next weekend, the first weekend in June ( 6/7 ) There are almost 2X's as many SM's signed up for the Pro IT the same weekend. Maybe the slightly lower entry cost for the Pro IT race is a factor, although 5 SM cars in the Pro IT vs 3 SM cars in the National is not a record turn out on either end I am sure.

Ouch. That is going to be a lonely looking race.

I know that I won't be there due to the R888s (ie currently don't have any while I'm burning up my RA1s)

I am planning on doing the practice day on Friday...

I just migh as well say it again...as I did a year ago...the economic and the attitude of the men in the white shirts is slowly killing the sport...the tires are a problem...but the men in the white shirts won't recognize the illness till the patient is dead. THERE I SAID IT AGAIN.

The worst is still ahead of us as far as the economy is concerned...watch the gasoline price jump this summer.

Mike, the economy has not made nearly the impact that the tires have. In on weekend we ruined more than half of our 888's just trying to figure them out.

David

Since the R888's are junk...how long will SCCA wait till it ruins one of the best classes in National racing...number never lie. We need a new spec tire and soon....real soon.

Word on the street is that NASA told Toyo to get a new shipment from Japan of the old R1's which they will run for the rest of the year in SM. Toyo doesn't get a choice with NASA, while SCCA sees it numbers dwindle down to 3 or 4 SM's when in the past they had 15 or 20 average for their nationals.

They remind me of GM and Chrysler...wait till it too late to recover and they throw in the towel

Kind of makes you think about when so many people (myself included) bitched about the SCCA tire testing.

I'd guess that, if they'd tested the R888, they could have avoided this mess.

But there was so much negativity about that test, who could blame them for not doing it again.

IMHO: This mess is not 100% Topeka's doing.

The R888 was tested.. Ironically it was the best wearing tire at the test.

Jim.

Why have the R888's developed such a dislike from the drivers? I presonally never ran them so I'm just repeating what others have told me... they call them junk.

I would love to know the reasoning behind Toyo's decision to change from the R1's to the R888's, unless they did it for "Change simply for the sake of Change".

Other tire companies must be drueling at Toyo's mistake...hoping to pounce the first chance they get.

Much of the R888 complaints are from those repeating what the have heard [Smile] While not my favorite tire, they are not as bad as most claim either. Other than the Texas race, I don't think the wear has been that bad, just more than the RA1. The RA1 lasted far longer than most, unfortunately for the R888, that is what SM community is used to. The RA1 was not without its faults either, but tire life wasnt one of them.

Zack.

I just got back from Millville and ran on R1'sin SM in the Pro IT race. I was convinced to get some R888 by our crew chief so I would have a choice if the R1's are ruled ineligible. But to be honest I kept up with the Rx7's for almost all the race....so I may switch to Goodyear's and run in ITS.

For those of you running the R888's, can you give me an idea of what you are running for hot presures. I tried 32 and 35, I am not thrilled at either.

You're not going to be thrilled at any pressure. I've tried everything from 28 to 40. .....They suck.
