I have something I would like to propose to all SM drivers, owners suppliers and just anyone interested in SM. On February 5 th through the 7th, the SEDiv has our 2010 Annual Convention & Awards Banquet scheduled at the Jekyll Island Oceanside Inn & Suites.

I would like to know how many of you would be interested in attending an all day seminar for Spec Miata. The seminar would be conducted by a panel of top competitors, builders and suppliers. You will be able to ask questions and get answers about just anything and hopefully, someone on the panel can provide an answer. At this time, the panel includes Tom Fowler, Chip, Jeffy Boy, Bobby T, Von C, Glenn from Traqmate and Rodney for tires from Appalachian. If enough people are interested, Drago will also be invited. We will have tech people available to answer impound questions and demonstrate tools such as the Whistler.

This would be a chance for everyone to compare notes, ask questions and in general, have a day of nothing but Spec Miata.

In order to attend, you would have to register and pay a fee for the meeting. The fee would be $25. You would also have the option of attending the Saturday night Awards Banquet for a total of $49 for meetings and Banquet. Our top series drivers will be receiving their Awards including Danny , Chip & Von C. Being at the Banquet with Chip & Von C is worth the price alone.

Please post your response and then spread the word because I need to make a decision in about 10 days. If it is a go, I will revise the Convention schedule for the all day SM meeting. The Convention Registration information and hotel information is posted at http://www.sedivracing.org. Hotel rates start at $59.

I have an unlimited budget only restricted by no $$ so offering appearance money is no problem. Collecting is different.

I would think that all of you can make suggestions concerning what you would like to discuss or what questions you would like to have answered. I might suggest some but most of you would already know the answers to things like what language Von C speaks, why does Fowler serve the best food, who prepares the best “cheater car”, who drives like a Palm Beach retiree or why would a guy who owns a body shop drive a pink car.

As for a moderator, again I’ll leave that up to you in the know to find someone gullible enough to do it. But a panel of Tom, Jim, Chip, Von C, Jeff, Bob, a Long and a Pombo would be a heck of a start. In addition, there will be experts there for Data Acquistion, Tires, Cool Suit and tech.

Discussion items could include but not be limited to the latest in motor rules including cylinder heads, suspensions, tuning and surviving post race impound. Perhaps, someone could bring a car to use for demonstrations of various items including the Whistler.

Another thought is that we invite Tim with Mazdaspeed to come and answer questions you might have about specific parts and what is best to use both for durability and performance.

There appears to be enough interest and I am going to go ahead tomorrow and make arrangements for an additional meeting room at the hotel. I would definitely suggest you contact the hotel and make a room reservation now. Rates start at $59. The hotel is the Oceanside Inn & Suites located on Jekyll Island. 1-866-5-JEKYLL. Rates are good until 12-31-09. The meeting is Saturday, Feb 6th and the SM meeting will start at 8 AM and go until 3:30 PM. The hotel has a buffet lunch and Sunday breakfast. The Awards Banquet is Saturday night. Again, being entertained by Von C is worth the $49 registration fee for the meeting & Banquet. I’ll even reserve an area for the SM attendees. All Convention information can be found at http://www.sedivracing.org.

Since this is a pre plated meal, we will not run out of food. However, you will have to pre register so we can get a banquet count. As for new jokes, I know a bunch but Toni won’t let me use them. If I did, I’d have to go home with Andrew. For those who may have never visited Jekyll Island, it is located on the Southern coast of Georgia about 20 miles from the Florida line. There’s a great beach to walk and hunt sand dollars, golf courses, the Millionaires Village to explore and a Casino boat for Friday night. Bring your family and let them explore the Island while you have your fun.

Bobby T attended the banquet in 2006 when he was SM SARRC Champion. I have made quite a number of visits to Jekyll Island since that weekend. Now, that I think about it, I have not seen one single raccoon since 2006.

There are still gators on Jekyll. Sorry about bringing up gators considering recent outcomes on the great field of glory.

Bobby T and I spoke last night and I think we've reached an understanding. He has to share what he kills. I may regret that. [help]

I passed this information out to everyone here at Sebring yesterday. BTW- if you need a room, email me at jcreig53@mindspring.com. I just got a special offer, $49 for oceanfront room, from the Jekyll Oceanfront Clarion and I'll send it to you.

Spec Miata Seminar
As part of the Southeast Division Annual Convention & Awards Banquet, an all day Spec Miata seminar has been scheduled. The Convention is scheduled for February 5-7, 2010 at the Oceanside Inn & Suites located at 711 N Beachview Dr on Jekyll Island, Ga. The host hotel is sold out but there are a number of hotels on Jekyll Island that still have rooms available including the Beachview Club and the Jekyll Oceanfront Clarion Resort. Both of these hotels are within a short distance of the host hotel. The meeting is scheduled on Saturday, Feb 6 starting at 8 AM.
The Convention & Awards Banquet is the Southeast Division annual business meeting and the Saturday night banquet is when all year end awards are presented for Division programs such as National Racing, the SARRC series, the ECR Series, plus Solo, Time trials & Rally. Several of the Division Spec Miata drivers will be receiving awards for 2009 including several special presentations.
As a part of the meeting, the Division is hosting an all day seminar for anyone interested in Spec Miata. The Division has invited representatives from Mazda, Toyo tires and the SCCA CRB to participate. Some of the principals for the Seminar will be Tom Fowler, Bob Thornton, Jeff Labounty, Chip Vanvurst, Glenn Long and Von Charbonneau.
The purpose of the seminar is to give those interested in SM an opportunity to hear the latest in Spec Miata technology and to allow you to ask any questions you might have concerning Spec Miata. In addition, specific track set up and driving techniques will be discussed. We will have examples of parts including current cylinder heads there for you to examine.
For those of you who might want to bring your family, Jekyll Island provides entertainment for all. In addition to having miles of beaches to walk, there is a large shopping area in the Millionaires Village. The Millionaires Village has tours of some of America’s finest homes built in the early 1900’s. For those who play golf, Jekyll Island has several world class golf courses. If you arrive early on Friday, there is also a Casino boat that departs from the land end of the Jekyll Island causeway at 6 PM.
Registration information for the meetings & Banquet can be found on the SEDiv website – http://www.sedivracing.org. Please complete the registration form and mail to the registrar. We must have a count for those attending in order to plan properly.
With your support, we hope we can build this into a National Spec Miata event in the future.

In planning a large event be it a Convention or a race, there is always a detail that gets over looked. I kept having that feeling that there was something I was forgetting in planning for the Spec Miata seminar.

Well, when I saw the last couple of posts, it hit me like the turn one tire wall at Sebring. I had not contacted the hotel to arrange extra bar staff for Fowler, Bobby T & especially Von C.

Thanks to those who brought it to my attention. The hotel is now arranging extra bar staff to be brought in from off the Island. Apparently, they are specially trained in handling large events such as this.

Now, I can leave Atlanta and head out for a week in Las Vegas without any worries that I am leaving a loose end. Perhaps while there, I can further bribe Drago or get something on him that will convince him to come play with us at the beach.

A reminder, if you are going to attend, please take a moment and go to http://www.sedivracing.org and get the registration form. Otherwise, your registration will take extra time ( and $$) at the event. There is a late fee for signing up at the event and all banquet dinners must be ordered in advance.

Hi Jim,

Do you have to register for the entire event even if you just plan on coming for the Spec Miata seminar? I was planing on coming and leaving that day. Thank you.

Jim,

Will you be circulating a list of SM Panel Discussion registrants prior to the event? I'm looking forward to putting a face with a name or screen name.

Mr. Jim,

I am planning to be at the convention, if there is anything I can do to ad value to the mentioned trio, please let me know. I have a 1988 tech check list.
